As far as we know (and how I'll play it), a troop spirit is summoned into a ball and the color of the ball indicates its strength. The swords can equip (carry) the ball and having one increases the sword's stats (aka they get a little stronger, or a little faster, or better at Stat X - usually minimal values). If the troop is a ranged unit like musketeers, archers, or catapult, they appear once at the beginning of each battle to fire off a volley and then go back into their ball.
They don't have wills of their own as far as we've seen in canon and are non-sentient (afaik). Mostly, they act as a stat boost or a secondary weapon and sit around inert 99% of the time.
