The Kayanni System.

Pictured: Planet Kayann at night
The Kayanni system consists of a red sun, a giant planet that was terraformed a long, long time ago, and its two moons. There are other planets nearby, but they are uninhabitable and have little atmosphere. All of them show heavy signs of mining/harvesting.
Kayann has a rather dense population, and not all of it lives on the ground. Unable to sprawl further, urban areas have been built straight up until towers and city lights are all that are visible from space. Most travel is done by air via hovercars. For those who can afford to live off-planet, there are a number of space stations in the general vicinity. A few are dedicated to the laborers who help transport goods from other planets to Kayann, and they are unmistakably less affluent.
Kayann’s largest moon is a coppery-red and is referred to by locals as the Red Queen. The smaller moon is yellow-white and follows a similar path across the sky, known as the White Prince. When their paths cross, it is known as the Embrace. It happens about once every three months, and marks the beginning of a new season. Not that there are any new seasons to be had on a deeply industrialized planet, but you can bet it’s still there in the corporate psyche. Seasonal blowout sales, anyone?
Brand Loyalty On A Whole New Level.
Here in the Kayanni system, there are many shops to visit, and many more advertisements for these shops all over the place. You can barely turn a corner without coming face to face with two different billboards, five different flyers, and at least two company jingles playing (annoyingly) in tandem, all vying for your attention! Everyone wants your credits! They also want to give you amazing deals for your continued business! Rewards programs are not only commonplace here, but very much a part of life. While you’re here, you should very seriously consider getting involved in a few of them. Who can argue with a “Buy ten ice cream cones, get your next one FREE!” punch card? Or a system for reward points that work like actual credits in participating stores?! Get on that bandwagon! There are deals to be had!
There are three names that Fleeters will get very, very used to seeing around: GlamCo, Alk Industries, and Floot Loops. These corporations are the three largest, most influential corporations here, and they seem to have their hands in everything, in one way or another. Even the seemingly smaller, family-owned, individualized businesses aren’t immune. Anyone curious enough to ask will find that these smaller businesses are in fact sponsored in some amount by one of the three.
The buildings here can get over a mile high, and are plastered with more advertising of the paper and video variety. Some of the corporations own whole towers-- and house their employees inside! This is also seen with the surrounding space stations as well.
Did you just mention "Floot Loops"?!
We sure did mention Floot Lops! Here in the Kayanni System, Floot Loops is just one of the three major players, and they were also the first. Any Floot Loops employee knows this small piece of trivia, because Floot Loops as a corporation is quite proud of it! If that sounds familiar to anyone in the Fleet, it might just be due to all those lovely sponsorships they’ve tossed your way. In fact, some of the Floot Loops higher-ups are more than happy to see you! Welcome to Kayann, Drift Fleet! They will be singing your praises, welcoming you with open arms, showing you off to the population at large!
… Unfortunately, the population at large won’t have any idea what’s going on, or who any of you people are. When asked, they will have never heard of you, know nothing about the Drift Fleet, except maybe that it might have been that weird old program in ancient times. However, there is much power in the possibility of getting freebies at participating Floot Loops stores and affiliates, so they might pretend to be just as happy to see you!
If any characters attempt to pursue Floot Loops as a source, try to ask questions or gather information, arrange meetings with higher-ups, etc., the company will happily oblige. They don’t mind being helpful to the Drift Fleet! They can tell you all about themselves as a company, what their mission is as a business, how they plan to keep making the Kayanni System a wonderful place to live with the help of both Alk and GlamCo. They will proudly mention their love for their planet, their population, and how they strive to do the best they can, just as they always have. And what about your needs, dear Drift Fleet? Do you need some ship repairs? A good deal on supplies and rations? Would you like some free passes to the best all-you-can-eat buffet in the area~? They will hook you up as well as they can!
However, any information about Atroma themselves will be terribly outdated - to the tune of about 1300 years! As it turns out, while Kayann was a stop for the Fleet for a small handful of cycles, Atroma suddenly ceased all contact with the planet one day. That’s when Alk Industries, GlamCo, and Floot Loops jumped in, to help the population stay on its feet, as well as to take advantage of all of the resources available in the system. And the rest, as they say, is history.
In the comments below, we can answer any specific questions that your characters might ask anyone involved with Floot Loops about Atroma. Please remember, information gathered will be very limited, and incredibly outdated - so don’t be too disappointed if your question is met with blank looks and confusion.
Points of Interest.

GETTING AROUND AND WHAT TO EXPECT:
Kayann gives a whole new meaning to the term urban jungle. The spaces between giant buildings are filled with flying zipcars, floating businesses, and loud city life. As a necessity, there are high speed trains, bridges, and platforms to help people get from point A to point B. Neighborhoods blend together creating a seamless industrialized space full of noise and people. It’s very, very easy for newcomers to get lost. There are state-sized Districts instead of cities (so people can at least say where they live/where they’re from), but the majority of governing and enforcing is done by private contractors, i.e. corporations.
The people who have settled Kayann are familiar to many passengers. They have orange-tan skin and light hair, though some of them have darker hair as well; the light-haired variety is a common sight along waystations and in other systems. There are a few outsiders, like the many-limbed Nunnilis, but they are in the minority.
Despite this, the culture feels more or less fast paced and focused on instant gratification. There are many reasons for people living here to be happy, and most of them come down to the three giant corporations that always seem to provide.
Though light pollution is heavy here, environmental pollution seems to be lower than it was in the past. Everything is powered by solar energy. However, public records state that the planet was rich in combustible resources several hundred years ago.
EXPLORING:
Commuting can be a nightmare. Buses are happy to shuttle people wherever they’d like to go, and there are superfast trains for long distance travel. Passengers can also get a temporary permit and rent a ‘hover’ as they’re called, but they have to follow the traffic rules or risk getting fined! Hope you figured out what orange, blue, and red mean! And the weird trapezoid shape at the corner, that too. For those who are less adventurous, there’s thankfully an autopilot option… but the autopilot is imperfect, and sometimes it might take an extra twenty minutes for no reason, or put your car upside down beneath a food bus just because.
While a majority of life here takes place in the air, the lowest level of Kayanni civilization seems… nothing special. It’s dark and crowded, but pollution is on its way out due to several corporations working together. There are robots and such who sweep through and clean up the waste. For the places that the light can’t reach, there is always an underground-- and in a place where everything is above ground, this is especially true. The red light portions of multiple districts have created an interesting web of contraband trade and less-than-savory occupations, rich in history and hedonistic culture in itself.
Natural landmarks aren’t a thing here. The planet was originally terraformed, so all the hills and mountains are idyllic and manufactured-- not to mention covered in buildings. Humanity always finds a way to adapt, after all… However, the immense sprawl can be considered a landmark in itself. High above everything else, almost near the clouds, are floating greenhouses and agricultural centers like giant flat airships. This is where food is grown and harvested, and the view of the planet below is beautiful-- especially at night.
SHOPPING:
For the most part, if you want it, you can find it (or something similar) here.
There are stores everywhere - even residential buildings tend to have a shop or two inside somewhere. General stores, large department stores, and huge complexes will carry a wide variety of goods (and services, sometimes) if you care to have a one-stop shopping experience. If you’re looking for something a little more specialized, you’ll be more interested in checking out the smaller, more specific stores -- but of course, even those are heavily advertised and under one corporate umbrella or another, so don’t hesitate to shop around and see if you can’t find a better deal elsewhere! And don’t forget about loyalty programs, wherever you go!
Since the overwhelming majority of the population is humanoid, most of the clothing here reflects that. There are some stores that directly cater to other alien anatomies, as well as many shops that will alter or custom-create clothing for any body type, extra appendages, or whatever your needs may be! The styles and trends in this system vary wildly, as corporations have adapted to appealing to all walks of life with a wide variety of tastes in fashion. The odds of finding clothing that a passenger might consider similar (... ish) to what they know from back home is certainly a lot higher here than in previous systems!
If you’re looking for weapons, you may be limited in your options… depending on where you look. In most legal, upstanding, reputable stores, you won’t be able to find anything much more dangerous than a large kitchen knife, or tools and utility/pocket blades meant for tradespeople. There are tasers for self defense, certified by the government to be inspected thoroughly and passing all legal checks. Otherwise, legally obtaining a weapon will probably mean improvising by purchasing a crowbar or a metal pipe - and even then, using that as a weapon definitely crosses the line into "illegal"!
However, if you’re willing to head to the shadier shops on the surface and network your way into the underground to get what you want, you have a few more choices. Blades can be found in varying lengths, both of the “old” steel variety or the “modern” photon-based beam. If you’re looking for ballistic weapons, you can find many types of guns: rifles, shotguns, handguns - both repeater-style and revolver-style models. All of these make use of compact photon energy rounds. Depending on your needs, you can purchase rounds meant to stun, to electrocute and incapacitate, to pierce, or to do decidedly more damage - possibly even kill. If you want something more custom than a standard and seemingly mass-produced blade or gun, it is very unlikely you’ll come across it here. There is already a supreme risk with selling what they have, so they aren’t very keen on getting customization happy - especially for strangers!
And remember: everything is exponentially more expensive through the underground. If you go that route for any of your shopping needs - even if it’s “just” for some illegally imported candy - be prepared to shell out a ton of credits.
FOOD & DRINK:
A day full of shopping is bound to make anyone hungry, and luckily, there is no shortage of food in this system! From insta-fast food to luxury dining, there are plenty of places to choose from. There are, of course, varying levels of freshness, quality, and service at any food establishments, but the locals have pretty good insight on where to go for the best - or the cheapest, if that’s more of a concern. Most everywhere uses system-native ingredients, mainly from the sky-level agricultural centers and farms, though fancier establishments might feature cuisine from other systems, and even fancier establishments will import what they need for true authenticity.
Coffee, tea, sodas, and energy drinks have made their way into the hearts and diets (and bloodstreams!) of Kayanni citizens. On every corner, you will inevitably find a Drink Stop (owned by Alk Industries), a Sippay (a Floot Loops affiliate), or a SweetSips & Things (recently acquired by GlamCo) to quench your caffeinated beverage needs. Some of them also serve a type of flaky pastry reminiscent of Earth scones, called bakies! Mmm, bakies.
More worried about booze? Definitely don’t worry about booze. There is plenty of booze to be had, and just as the shops and restaurants vary wildly in atmosphere and selection, so do the bars. Whether you’re looking for a loud and noisy night out, or somewhere cozy and plush to lounge while you sip the night away, you’re bound to find the right place for you. And hey, remember those loyalty programs? Some of those extend to bars, too! Become a regular, get bonuses! How awesome is that?
JOBS:
Where there’s money to be had, there’s always someone who needs something done.
Drivers - Guber is hiring taxi drivers! For those who want a little more adventure, there are courier jobs-- both legal and shady-- to be had.
Bodyguards - Putting the security in job security, the underground always needs people to enforce their own street laws and protect their precious assets.
Retail slave - The turnover rate for checkers at the store is pretty insane. But this is just a temporary job at minimum wage… surely it can’t be that bad, right? Until the guy with the multiple elephant trunks for a face starts honking at you unintelligibly, that is.
Agricultural work - The agricultural centers and farms in the sky level are always in need of workers - from watering, to trimming or pruning, to harvesting, and so much more.
These are just some ideas! If there’s a job that would exist in a big city, it probably needs doing here. Food service, customer service, whatever you can think of-- it’s probably fine. If you’re unsure, you can always ask!
RECREATION:
Kayann has a lot going on - it’s a practically planetwide big city after all! More often than not, natives are dead set on getting from Point A to Point B with very little in-between time for detours and leisure, but honestly, who can live life like that all of the time? There is plenty to do to let off some steam, should you care to make the time for it. There’s shopping, of course - the whole system is stuffed full of shopping, after all! - but if you’re looking for something else, you’ll surely find it.
Like most bustling city centers, Kayann sports your standard variety of things to to do: day spas, overnight spas in fancy hotels, guided tours, sponsored pub/bar crawls, karaoke, quiz and trivia events, sports/recreation centers… The sky’s the limit here. Actually, literally the sky also has things to do, from skydiving, to air tours, to the equivalent of hitting golf balls off of the edge of an agricultural float and into the ocean below. If you can dream it, you can likely do it somewhere on this planet.
Unfortunately, as industrialized and corporate as this place is, all of the more nature-like parks are long gone. There will be no leisurely strolls along the trails, sitting on benches beneath trees or by some man-made lake or fountain fixture - there’s just no time for any of that these days. Closer to the shores of landmasses, beaches are open for public use, though you will likely find that they are just as crawling with advertisements and branding as the rest of the planet. That doesn’t stop the natives from enjoying the sun, sand, and waves, though! So why let it stop you?
While there may not be park parks, there are amusement parks aplenty! What better way to promote business than to provide a fun atmosphere with all the thrills you can pack into your day? Whether just outside major city-center limits, or floating on a manmade construct over the water, these amusement parks offer thrill rides, roller coasters, midways full of games and prizes to win, videogame and virtual reality arcades, and much, much more! Feel like some laser tag? Find a park that has an arena! Does Ice skating appeal to you? How about rollerblading? Done, and done! Would you rather hang out in a theater and watch a live show? What about a movie of some sort - possibly even in Hyperdimensional IncrediBold Resolution™, the latest craze in media consumption? Knock yourself out!
Enjoy life in the big city, Fleet! Hopefully the fast pace won’t leave you in the dust!

a.) Sam can find books old and new, honestly - but they will be very alien in nature, nothing from Earth. If he's curious, the #1 fiction bestseller at the moment is The Undersea, a speculative science fiction novel about a movement that promises a more relaxing life in cities built beneath the oceans of Kayann, and the unfortunate pair of detectives that uncover ~the shocking truth~. (spoilers: it's a cult! gasp!)
b.) Anything "related" to Earth around here is a complete knockoff. As for antiques that might be reminiscent of Earth-ish things, it's possible, but do you have any specifics in mind? There's always a market for "classics" of a variety of things, after all, so there could be something!
c.) Jarvis can procure all of the things for his bistro! Everything that comes out of the agricultural centers and farms is quality! So go wild! Of course, as we leave the system, if Jarvis wishes to stockpile perishables, he'll of course have to make sure the restaurant has the means to do so: sufficient freezers, etc. Still, shouldn't be a problem!
d.) Takeshi can find a wide range of toys, so if you (or he) can dream it, it's likely there. Currently, the popular toy of choice appears to be a doo-dad the size of one's head, with what looks like propellers extending from a circular point in the middle, almost like a fan! When pressure is applied to the center point, it spins. Be careful, though! Some groups of Concerned Parents are reporting their kids getting smacked in the face with them! Perhaps they shouldn't have been made to be so large?!

b.) Honestly he's a hoarder and secretly attracted to the past, so he'll take whatever reminds him of the ~1970's era, lmfao.
c.) GOTCHA. Thank god, the bistro is safe from the extreme eaters with all this extra stuff.
d.)So many new toys, a+, thank you.
