THEY'RE LIKE REALLY ANGRY CHILDREN
It isn't okay, obviously. It's just not.
Huffing a noise, he almost growls. ]
You don't want it but you make a big fuss about making me give it back? What the hell, Dezel?
[ But he holds his hands up in surrender, glad he doesn't have to give it up. The idea makes him ache, and he touches the rim of it with careful fingers, tugging it lower over his face, to hide his expression. ]
It belonged to you. That's why I've got it.
and zaveid is like 49349324932 years old which makes it funnier
[The delicate way Zaveid touches the hat makes something in his stomach twist. It isn't like he's disrespecting it. Maybe Zaveid knew Lafarga, too-- Dezel never got the chance to ask either of them. Not that he remembers Zaveid all that well, even now.]
Wait. That's why you...
[It doesn't make sense with the way Zaveid presents himself. He was always an obstacle to the journey, right up until the very end, where he just gave up entirely and handed over Siegfried. But there's something in Zaveid's voice, something--
-- he can almost remember...
But it never comes, and in its place Dezel feels something missing more than ever. He's flustered at the memorial, and furious at his own memory as well as the man in front of him.]
Yeah, sure. It's not like I can stop you. [He can't make trouble. He can't make trouble. He can't make trouble.
Ugh, but he wants to make trouble. If nothing else, he'd feel better just punching Zaveid in the face once or twice. Or three times. He can take it!]
OLD MAN FIGHTS SMOL CHILD
[ The unspoken 'idiot' hangs between them, and for a moment all Zaveid can do is huff a noise. This is awkward and uncomfortable, made worse by his own dip-dive of emotions, all the things he had kept inside that are rushing to the surface with awkwardness and tension rolling through his body. Either Dezel doesn't remember or he's playing dumb, and usually he's not this good at playing stupid - Zaveid should know, he's practically a master at it now, a professional and shrugging his shoulders and making it seem like he has no idea what's going on.
Instead he bows his head, squeezing his eyes shut before he turns his head away. He's at a loss and it would sure help if Lailah or Sorey were here to balance out the madness they feel and the intensity of the moment. He needs his Prime Lord, he thinks, and that reminds him of what he's going to have to do in the future - Dezel's back, isn't he?
Dezel's back and Zaveid was always his replacement.
His fingers push the hat lower on his head and he shakes himself out of his thoughts, fighting back the urge to smirk. ]
I'd like to see you try. [ Easier to goad and nudge and push than it is to face his own emotions, and Zaveid knows that it's not healthy but who cares? Who gives a shit when he's right here hurting and the only way for him to get it out is to be snide and dangerous?
He's flirty with Lailah, Edna and Rose. He jokes with Mikleo and Sorey. He fights with Dezel.
That's how it should have worked. ]
HEY DONT BRING MIKLEO INTO THIS
What the hell is wrong with you? First you're one thing, then another--
[Dezel might be gruff and defensive and reticent at the worst moments, but he doesn't wear a mask like Zaveid does. And that really gets under his skin. And that in itself makes him blind with rage.]
Do you want something, Zaveid?! [He practically spits the name. He shouldn't make trouble. He shouldn't-- but he is.
And with that comes another whip flying at Zaveid's head.]
GONNA GO TELL ON YOU TO MOM AND DAD
There's nothing wrong with me! You're just trying to start a fight, just like always!
[ They're getting at each other, getting under each other's skin, and it's because Dezel doesn't remember. Zaveid can remember talking to Sorey after, asking how Dezel had been just before the end, and he'd been smiling. He'd remembered so much, but at the same time he hadn't remembered the one thing Zaveid had wanted him to. It infuriates him and that's because he knows it hurts.
He steps to one side, darting out of the way of the pendulum before he shakes his head. ]
I'm not going to fight you, Dezel. Not today.
... YOU /ARE/ DAD THO HOW YA GONNA TELL ON URSELF???
[Don't modulate the key then not debate with me! Zaveid started it, in his eyes. By existing.
Okay, so maybe he's not being the most mature right now, but Zaveid is acting stranger and stranger, and Dezel can almost bring himself to care. Especially when there's something grating in Zaveid's tone as he completely and utterly turns him down.
A fight would be so damn satisfying right now, that's why Dezel keeps trying, but Zaveid is trying to be the better man. Like hell he is. Dezel actually growls this time, baring sharkish teeth, and then he calls back his pendulum (again). What a waste of energy.
He feels like he did something wrong, and for a seraph whose guilt is already overwhelming, it isn't a good sensation. It upsets him. It makes him want to apologize for something he doesn't really regret. He regrets leaving Rose and the others so suddenly. He regrets getting her hurt. But he doesn't regret how he went.
And why the hell should Zaveid care?]
Fine. Suit yourself. [He turns around, fists balled up beneath his sleeves and his jaw set.] Unlike you, I don't have any time to waste.
HE'LL TELL THE LESSER DAD, THE SMOL DAD, THE SOREY DAD
Dezel who died smiling. Dezel who was going to kick their asses if they didn't stop trying. Dezel who protected Rose and forgot everything else, creating something beautiful out of her. And now all Zaveid can do is stand in front of him staring, at a loss, not sure how he's supposed to handle the way his life has turned.
He doesn't care about being here, being stolen away from the world. He doesn't care about standing here not knowing where Sorey is or where Lailah is or how his pact might come to an end. All he cares about is the one man standing in front of him, and damn if it doesn't hurt that Dezel doesn't give a shit back. ]
You're the one that came and found me, remember?
[ He can't help goading because, deep down, he doesn't want to lose Dezel again. That's his fear; that something will tear them apart and something will come between them and that'll be it. They might share a Prime Lord but even that might change if Lailah ever came to find them. ]
You found me. [ His voice is quieter, now. ] I'm almost sorry I'm not what you wanted.
/GASP/ NOT THE SMOL DAD!!!! YOU WOULDNT!!!!!
Seraphim are different, varying in element as well as temperament. Journeying with Sorey and his friends, Dezel finally came to understand other people besides himself-- at least a little. That was a comfort. But a wind seraph, the most familiar thing in the world, is so very different from him that he can't-- can't wrap his head around it.
Maybe part of him expects Zaveid to be more like Lafarga. Maybe part of him is trying to remember something he's forgotten. Maybe he just hates Zaveid for no reason. Maybe all of these things are true, but they don't make things any easier.]
I don't know what I wanted. And I don't think you know what you wanted, either.
[He starts walking.]
YOU KNOW HE WOULD
Zaveid would forget too, he thinks, if it wasn't so important for him to remember. He knows so many things that could help Lailah, that could help Sorey, and he can't just push them to one side. Maybe he hates Dezel a little for being able to forget things, or maybe he pities him. Maybe it's something else entirely something he can't name because that would make it far too real, far too... Much.
Either way, all he can do right now is shake his head, shrugging a shoulder and pretending to play it off, like it doesn't matter. ]
I'm not going anywhere, you know that, right?
[ He says it to Dezel's retreating back, crossing his arms. ]
I'm gonna be right here when you're really ready for me.
