There are a number of us from there. You're not the only elf, either.

[Though Fenris really isn't elf-y so she's not sure how much that'll really help.]

[ That's interesting. Sera? Or someone from her clan? Or maybe someone else entirely.

She doesn't want to think about it being the other elf in her life. ]

Who else is here?

Well let's see. There's yours truly, Riona Cousland. Two Champions of Kirkwall (it's complicated). An elf from Tevinter. A human from Tevinter. [And she is so not about to oust Justice and Anders, so...] and two Wardens. we're a fun bunch.

[ The Hero of Ferelden, two people from Tevinter, two Champions of Kirkwall and a pair of Grey Wardens? Lavellan is struggling to wrap her mind around it all and she breathes out a sharp noise.

One thing gets her more than anything, so - ]

[ For a moment all she can do is feel the urge to thank all the Dalish Gods that she had believed in for so long, but the urge comes and goes with a snap of memory. Instead, she lets herself bask in the relief of knowing she's not entirely alone. ]

[ Josie would have her head for how rude she's being - ]

Leilani of clan Lavellan. I apologise for not introducing myself sooner.

[Lavellan. Lavellan... Lavellan...

It takes her a moment before the memory snaps into place. One of the names she heard associated with the Inquisitor. The one in her Thedas had been Trevelyan, but if she remembers right, Adalwolfe mentioned his being called Lavellan.]

well met, Inquisitor.

And to you, Lady Cousland.

[ She had learned some things from Josephine, after all, and even though she's uncertain she considers her options. If this is the Cousland she thinks... But can she be sure? ]

You mentioned two Champions?

["Lady Cousland". Maker it's been years since she's been referred to as such. Was Lavellan being polite, or did she know something about her family? But that conversation can wait.]

ah, yes. so... you know what, I'm switching to video. easier to talk than to type out this madness.

[A few seconds later, Riona's face pops up on screen. She waves a little.]

So. Yes, we have two Champions of Kirkwall. There's a funny little phenomenon here called parallel universes and it seems to happen a lot with Thedas. Essentially, there are countless "versions" of Thedas out there. They seem essentially the same, but there are some differences in how certain things played out and who partook in those events. Take, for example, you. The Inquisitor who wrote to me wasn't an elf named Lavellan, but a human with the last name Trevelyan.

[ For a moment she is completely and utterly startled by the sudden shift to video - she stares down at it, her mouth dropping open, before Riona starts talking and she drops the device.

Magic.

Carefully, though, she picks it up, just in time to catch the wave - and wave back, awkwardly. ]

This... [ Give her a moment, she's processing. ] Trevelyan? [ She's sure she recognises the name, somehow... ]

[Oops, maybe should have given her a heads up. It just goes to show Riona's been in this place too long.]

Yes, that's her name. And one of the Champions here knows a Lavellan who was Inquisitor, though I believe that Lavellan was a man. Think of it like a story being told and passed around, but the details get changed a bit each time. Before you know it, you have several versions of that story hanging around, similar but not quite the same.

Our stories are like rumours. There is no truth unless you were present.

[ Much like the history of the Dalish, she thinks, and when she settles down and makes herself comfortable she feels as though there's a knot in her stomach. She had given so much up in order to lead the Inquisition, and the idea that, somehow, someone else might have done the same... Did her choices even matter? Was what she did worthwhile, in the end?

She will end up a story. She might become the next Fen'Harel. It's enough to chill her. ]

I'm not sure how I should feel.

Doesn't make them any less real, necessarily. My truth differs from yours, but they're both still the truth. People made choices. Some carry across all the worlds, and some don't.

[Where Duncan decided to recruit his Warden. Who the person that would be the Hero of Ferelden named to the Fereldan throne. Who the Champion befriended. And... whatever circumstance made the Inquisitor the Inquisitor, she doesn't know that story.]

It's all right. I know it's a lot to swallow. The only reason I say it now is to avoid any potential awkward, painful situations. You know Dorian, right? But... be careful when you approach him. He might not know you.

It sounds like Varric's stories. It may not all be entirely correct, but it is based on something that did truly happen. The Champion of Kirkwall did not become famous for doing nothing, after all.

[ Which is enough, she thinks. If the Inquisition goes down as a story of an Elf doing right by the world, protecting it from the worst of evils, from would-be Gods... She thinks she might be able to accept that easily enough. ]

... I'm not sure how I'll handle that.

They're true as true can be. But it's fun to hear what things are different. Fun, but sometimes... well, sometimes scary, sometimes heartbreaking. And sometimes it makes you take a step back and wonder if that's what you should have done.

[It's a futile exercise, though.]

Unfortunately, I can't give you a good answer. Just try and remember it's nothing personal, and the other person won't feel great about hurting you like that. If you managed to become friends once, you can do it again.

There's no changing it, though, is there? Some things are the same because they're out of your hands. Sometimes there are people involved that don't make it easier, or better, they just make it worse.

[ Not... That she's upset about anyone in particular. Better to move on, she thinks. ]

I hope... [ She frowns, considering. ] I hope, if he doesn't know me, the person that did was good to him.

[Riona nods slowly. That, ah, does smack of something akin to anger. It certainly speaks to something personal, but she's far too new of an acquaintance to push the subject. And besides, hasn't everyone known someone like that, who exists in your life and winds up making things worse?]

I hope so as well. I don't know him well, but Dorian doesn't strike me as the type to stick around, though, if someone rubs him the wrong way too much. And he seems to have stuck with the Inquisition in his world so far.

[ She's not entirely sure if she ought to talk about Solas and all the things that happened, but her discomfort relaxes just a little when Riona doesn't push. ]

No, he's - well, he's Dorian. It's difficult to get to know the real man, but when you do it is worth every second.

You sound like you two are very good friends. He seems decent enough, especially considering where he's from.

[He belongs to the upper classes, which she equates to the magisters. The last one she came across, she murdered.]

He's better than people give him credit for. [ His heritage betrays him on that front. ] There are very few people I would trust as much as I trust him.
