[ Jack pauses to examine a flower hanging from a tree and makes sure to carefully remove it and place it in a bag. ]
You remember if they said anything about what happens if it starts affecting you?

A bit like a madness, I think. And something abut your... fears coming to life out here.
[ He glanced at the swirling tendrils around them, biting his lip behind his mask, glad it wasn't visible. ]
Basically nothing good, which is why they don't spend much time down here.

[ Still, Kirk's got a point. He flips open his vortex manipulator and finds the clock. It hasn't been long by any other planetary standards, but if this air was toxic, who knew how long they could last... or most people could last anyway? Will this even affect him? ]
They give any kinda time table?

No, I take them at their word. Your fears coming to life is probably a very real thing - though which fears that come to life I have no idea. Not that anyone would want to run into their fears or someone else's. If being in the Fleet has taught me anything? Nothing is ever metaphorical.
[ Kirk looked up through the layers of mist, able to see the faintest, faintest shadow of the island they had descended from. ]
I don't think we should be out here for more than a couple of hours, and we shouldn't go to very far from the island. If we had the ships with us, I would say we could range further, but in this instance - safe bet as we wet out feet, yeah?

Fine. If that's what you think, then we should make the most of it. Think you can give me a boost? There's some vines I think can get me up to the upper layers of branches. You can manage that at least, right, boyscout?

[ It wasn't that he was adhering to them strictly, he was simply testing the waters cautiously based on their testimony to what was happening on their planet. He as quiet for a moment after Jack's request and then turned to him as if in surprise - all mockery of course. ]
Oh, I'm sorry, did you need help? I heard you ask for a doormat, but I forgot to bring it with us.
[ Yeah, he wasn't appreciating the attitude, Jack, when he hadn't been giving you any and just been answering your questions honestly. ]

Kirk's snarkiness made Jack huff and grimace. What did this pup think he had in advantage over Jack? The arrogance of him. Still, he sighed. Maybe he had been a little rude. ]
Sorry. The heat's got me testy. Would you mind giving me a boost up? I'd at least be out of your hair for a little bit.

[ Well Kirk was no subordinate. He had just met Jack, and Kirk was used to being in charge himself. If Jack expected him to fall in line he had another thing coming. Kirk had always been notoriously bad at taking orders. ]
Sure. Do you have a light on you? I can track you through the trees and keep pace if you move along any.
[ He came to the base of one of the trees and knelt, making a cup with his hands. ]
no subject
I've got one. Might be easier to track me if I keep hold of it.
[ He pops the thing sideways into his mouth and takes a moment to plan his trajectory, giving Kirk a small nod before he takes a hurried step toward him to try to leap up into the tree. ]
no subject
That was the idea, yes.
[ But he dutifully kept his hand cupped and waited for the signal, huffing as he threw Jack upwards, pushing up with his thighs and craning his head back to watch the other ascend. ]
Can you see any further up there?
[ Their visibility was crap down on the ground, as it was. Maybe a few dozen feet in front of them at best. ]
