A Cactus...

[ She tries the foreign word out and decides she likes it. It's a very crisp sound, which fits the spines that cover the thing. ]

Yes, they do look spiny. This is a plant, then? Or an animal that has adhered to the rock?

[the_tailor]

That's all plant. They're one of the only plants that can survive in the desert, 'cause they're good at retaining water. Or something.

[Sue him, botany was never his strong subject.]

I used to have a little tiny one in my dorm room back in the Garrison! But then I knocked it over and stepped on it by accident and it was noooooot fun.

That would be an excellent adaptation to desert life. And they come in different sizes?

[ Seeing one of those miniature would be rather cute, she imagines. RIP Lance's cactus. She can only hope it found a swift end. ]

They're not poisonous, are they?

They do! The ones you're looking at are the general size of 'em. Where most of us met back on Earth... It was the desert, so there were a lot of them around.

[RIP the cactus? RIP his foot!]

Nah, just really painful if you get shoved into one.

[ She approaches one carefully. Luckily it is too large to repeat Lance's mistake. ]

We should do best to avoid that, then. But it must be nice to see something of home.

It is. Funny, 'cause we're out so far into space.

[Lance smiles over at her. Honestly, he loves seeing Allura fascinated about new things.]

It leads me to believe that we all have more in common than we might realize.

[ She pauses in front of the giant plant, then carefully gives it a poke between the spines. it's surprisingly smooth otherwise. ]

Not just you and I, of course--Alteans and Humans, but many other species as well. Clearly the universe saw this survival plan fit to exist in more places than just one.

It did. I could probably sit around and think about it for a good long while from some kind of philosophical standpoint, but that's usually not my thing. What was it that Keith said once, though...? Something about us being all made from the same cosmic dust? It really is fascinating. And comforting, too.

[He reaches out to touch the cactus as well, though yelps a little and pulls back when he pricks himself.]

Yes, and something we should keep in mind.

[ Arguably a lesson that she had to learn herself, but she's working on it. It is understandably more difficult to forgive people who were involved in annihilating her home.

...Didn't you just warn me to be careful?

I did. I'm really, really bad at taking my own advice.

[He gives a little whimper and sticks his finger in his mouth, trying to sooth the little wound with his tongue.]

[ Goodness. Allura crosses her arms. Indeed, he should have listened to his own warnings. ]

[ Then sighs and uncrosses them a moment later. ]

[He holds out his hand to her, then. A year ago, he would have batted his eyelids at her and asked her to kiss it better. But, well, things have definitely changed.]
