Once he was sure he had cleared the area with the disgruntled shopkeeper, he slowed his pace, looking behind his shoulder. Surely if someone could blink in and out of sight like that, they would be hard to shake off, and for once, Eames wasn't interested in dodging this pursuer. It would be a show of bad manners to not at least thank the person who had saved him from a muddy and silly fate.]

I didn't think you'd hang around, [ she says while flicking mud off the foam bat like she would blood off a sword, tucking it into her obi at her back. ] Thieving doesn't seem to be taken lightly here.

[Eames gave a disarming grin, though the gesture with the bat wasn't lost on him. It called to mind the old black and white samurai movies, and given how quick and agile this woman was, it seemed foolish to take her lightly.
He took a few steps forward, not sure if he should extend his hand, but he gave a brief inclination of his head in greeting and gratitude.]
Does it not bother you? I'm surprised anyone would side with a thief.

[ eames' grin isn't lost on her, but her face remains impassive. she returns his gesture with a nod of her own. ]
It's not something I'd condone, but we must do what we can to survive despite the circumstances.
[ even if it means resorting to stealing. kagero may have been privileged enough to be born into a respectable clan, but she's seen enough during her time serving the hoshidan royal family. perhaps more so in the recent months, corrin's travels have forced them all to face the more unsavory sides of both kingdoms. ]
Though, in truth, a thief saved my life once. Now my debt has been paid, so I suppose I should thank you as well.

Now that she was here, he was going to start moving again, putting as much distance as he can between himself and the shopkeeper, though his steps are leisurely.]
I hardly did anything, though I'm glad your debt has been repaid.
[A small pause, because he wasn't sure whether he should be nosy or not, but she had brought it up-]
I have a hard time imaging a capable lady such as yourself needing help. What happened?
no subject
there's a flicker-flash of something like embarrassment when he calls her capable, but she shakes her head. ]
We are at war in my world. I was charged with protecting Lord Ryoma during a skirmish, but had left my back open. An axe wielder would have struck me down were it not for that thief's arrow, which took his life before he could.

Sounds like you were very lucky.
[On any battlefield, there was always a thin line between life or death, and in an era where it was axes and arrows, it was probably worse.
He glanced over at her, gauging her expression.]
What happened to the thief? And your lord?
no subject
[ there's not a day that goes by that she doesn't think about what could have happened, if niles hadn't shot the barbarian down from afar. before that battle, the impromptu union between the two kingdoms was shaky at best, but it only solidified it afterwards when the battle was through. ]
Both of them [ "are"? "were"? ] are safe. The thief is Lord Leo's retainer whom none of us trusted at first. But personality aside, he is a good man.
no subject
That seems like a pretty accurate assessment of most thieves.
[Well, those who did it out of necessity anyway. The jury was probably still out on Eames, who did it half to survive and half because he had started, so might as well continue.]
Though you couldn't have just... vanished out of the way of the axe wielder? Like you did when attacking the shopkeeper?
