She's doing this. She moves off the land and walks directly on top of the sludge without sinking in. Molecules are molecules. Makes no difference to her which ones she's standing on when phased. She finds the spot it sank and reaches down. This is where the physics and power control gets tricky, but luckily writers pretty much have her do whatever they want at the time so...she pulls the ball back up—hand dry.]
