I try not to leave Earth too often.

I don't remember being here three months ago. [ which infuriates him, but he'll set that aside for later. the simplest explanation is always the best, tony. panic serves no one. ] But assuming this isn't some sort of hallucinogenic trip gone wrong, how long was I here? Anybody else from my neck of the woods here? People that know me and don't want to kill me? That sort of thing.

[resnipstance]

Hmmm. You were around for about two months? We never really talked about our respective home worlds, though. Most of the time we were too busy talking shop about engineering. And the one time I told you anything about home, we got into an argument about it.

But Peggy told me that you're from the same world as her, if that helps? She said you're just a few decades in the future from her. I don't know if that means anything to you.

[privatizes]

[ engineering. that sounds right. telling someone they're wrong. also sounds right. hmmm. ]

[ that is her name. now that ahsoka says it. ]

She definitely didn't know me, that's for sure. [ howard stark kept so much of his life private that tony finds it difficult to really believe that his father did so much of what tony is currently doing now. but that's another issue for another day. ] How's it possible that I don't remember being here for two months? My memory is bad, but not 'missing two months of my life' bad.

[ what in the hell is going on ]

[Ahsoka shrugs.]

It's not the first time it's happened. Like I said, I'm just assuming different universes. Otherwise-- I mean, if you reject the theory that there are other possible versions of ourselves, then the only possibility that remains is that there aren't.

And if there's only ever one of us, well... that means the Atroma are wiping our memories. And I don't know about you, but I'm not really okay with that!

Ever heard of Occam's Razor?

[ but before he waits for a response -- ]

The simplest explanation is usually the best one. I could believe somebody mind-wiped me and shoved my brain through a squeegee before shoving me back in here. Makes sense. Seen it before. Could name about fifty-thousand people that would love to do it to me. Or there could be alternate timelines, and time travel. Seen it before. Could be done. Makes about as much sense as the first theory.

Either way, the Atroma can get bent.

[ pause ]

You've never had someone recognize you before, that you don't know?

[resnipstance]

... It's only happened to me here once. The person was someone from my future, back home. Why?

[privatizes]

Curious if I'm alone. An anomaly.

[ but apparently he is not ]

So maybe it's a little column A, little column B... memory and time shenanigans.

[resnipstance]

It's not just you. It happened to someone I was friends with here, too.

I wish there was some way to test it. But there just isn't.

There's always a way.

It just hasn't been found yet -- so what's the odds we get out of this rock, television show, whatever? How do people leave? They just go proof one morning and that's it, or what?

[resnipstance]

That's basically it, yes. Nobody seems to have found a way to be able to do it deliberately. Or if they have-- they're not sharing.

Secret like that is too big to hide unless it's being kept by the people who want to keep us here.

[ which ... is probably the case. ]

If there's a way in, there's a way out. Universe is only so big.

[resnipstance]

I agree. Problem is, how do you work on a solution to getting out when they're watching you all the time?

[privatizes]

The same way everybody does. Government surveillance isn't new.

[ the united states government frequently monitors what tony does in his world, but tony always sends them delightful little virii to remind them who is boss. that option doesn't seem to be available here.

yet. ]

There are ways around it. You've just got to be creative.

[resnipstance]

Yeah, well. Maybe don't announce your plan to be creative where they can hear you, Big Shot.

[She hopes he gets the hint embedded in that. She doesn't want to outright say "I'm working on something" after all the trouble she's gone to inventing her own code to pass notes around to keep her plans a secret, after all.]

I'm sure they've read my portfolio; I'm not exactly the type of person to sit around and play nice.

[ he gets it; loud and clear. but there's little point, to tony, to hide the fact that he wants to get out of here. surely everyone wants to get out of here, on some level. no one likes being a prisoner. and if tony truly has been here before, then he's sure the atroma already have his number. there's no point in hiding it. ]
