[ His expression changes to one of awe and surprise. ]

There are other superheroes?

Sure. [Said like "of course." But...] Other in addition to whom?

[anewhope]

[ He hesitates. He doesn't want to call himself a superhero. ]

We have a vigilante in Gotham and . . . another in Metropolis.

[passingthrough]

[She'd rather be called a vigilante too. Sometimes she just says she's an assassin even though that paints the wrong picture. Freedom fighter might be the most accurate from her situation.]

Gotham sounds familiar. [From her days in the last multidimensional trap. It's where Artemis Crock and Terry McGinnis were from, but that doesn't come to mind.]

Lots of people in the Fleet have powers. I'm not sure they're all heroing with them, but you'll run into that a lot.

[anewhope]

[ People with powers. People like him. It was . . . exhilarating. ]

That's . . . impressive. That they can all be in one place.

[passingthrough]

You get used to it. [She takes a step backward directly into a display so that parts of her have disappeared and it looks like there's a mask sticking out of her shoulder.] Ta-dah?

[anewhope]

[ He can't help the double-take. ]

Amazing. Should I clap?

[passingthrough]

[She steps back out to re-solidify.] I don't really know what the appropriate reaction to that is. I just roll with whatever happens. It's always nice when it's recoiling in fear or trying to kill me.

[anewhope]

Does that happen a lot?

[ Was this the future his father spoke of? ]

Not in the fleet. [At home, pretty much all the time.]

[anewhope]

[ Then it seems some things have not changed. Looks like you were right, Pa. ]

It's good to know at least in some places, you can be accepted.

I had my team back home too. The X-Men. I'm guessing you've never heard of us.

[anewhope]

No. Like I said. There aren't many superheroes around.

[ He still doesn't count himself as one. Not yet. ]

That's a big word. I realize I used it first, but The Vision has a "the" in his name and a cape. It felt appropriate there.

[anewhope]

[ He nods. ]

To be honest . . . I'm not even sure I'm using it correctly.

[passingthrough]

I don't know if there is actually a right way. I just know when I hear it I think about the people I didn't get to in time, and I don't feel so super or heroic.

...And that was a lot of realness to drop on a guy I just met who pretends not to break masks on purpose.

[anewhope]

[ Unintentionally, he finds himself thinking about Zod. He never wanted to hurt him, much less . . . kill him. And it's a choice Clark will have to carry with him, for the rest of his life. He's not a hero, just someone so desperate not to let Krypton hurt any more people.

To not let that legacy end in such a way. ]

I didn't break it on purpose.

[The kills weigh on her too. There wasn't a lot of choice. The X-Men didn't have the resources to hold other mutants for an indefinite amount of time. No one did. Civilization had collapsed. There weren't laws or institutions anymore. To save innocent lives they took the lives of the attackers.]

Then what were you doing?

[anewhope]

I just . . . don't know my own strength?

[ He's so good at secret identities, really. ]

So you were testing it?

Because you're the vigilante from Metropolis? [It's a bit of a leap, but sometimes you just throw a theory out there and see how people react to it and go from there.]

[anewhope]

[ He sighs. Why was he so bad at this? ]

Was it that obvious?

[passingthrough]

Not until you asked that. [Smiling.] Are your powers working differently here? [Since you don't know your strength and all.]

[anewhope]

I get my powers from the sun. They're a little weaker than what I'm used to.

[ And he's used to living in a world made of cardboard. Always restraining himself, always making sure he's applying the right amount of pressure. ]

[passingthrough]

Yeah? You don't have an adorable blond cousin do you? [Because the sun part is familiar, but it could apply to lots of people. A couple of Apocalypse's recruits had powers dependent on the sun too.]

[anewhope]

[ A cousin? ]

I'm the only one left from my planet.
