What would've been lucky would be if we weren't in this situation to begin with, some days.

That isn't to say I'm not appreciative of the life I've made. And maybe it's different for you. You never really knew anything besides Earth...

[ That's true. All he knew were the brief glimpses his father showed him. He was grateful for those, but he had wanted more. More than a legacy on his shoulders. ]

[ she goes for the joke but her heart's not really in it. she doesn't get to talk about this stuff very often. she doesn't want to make alex feel bad, and the others just don't really get it ]

[ And he smiles warmly, albeit a little bashful. ]

I'd like to tell you about it sometime.

But right now, tell me about you? How long have you been at the Superman thing?

A few weeks? Not very long by anyone's reckoning.

[ And he's still getting the hang of it, from the way he fiddles with his glasses or trying to think on his feet for the best excuse. When he helped people before, he just walked out of their lives. Disappeared, like a ghost. Now, he's here to stay and he wants it to work.

With Lois, with the Planet, with . . . everyone. ]

Wow. You really are fresh off the presses.

The glasses, though, really. They're just for the disguise? Mine are lined in lead, since I'd get overwhelmed when I was younger.

I never realized that.

[ For him, it was just a matter of teaching himself restraint. Then make it small, his mother had said and that's what Clark had done. Every single instinct, every bit of power he has forced down as deeply as he could. A world small enough for himself and his family.

It wasn't enough anymore though. ]

How to control it enough so I don't hurt anyone and anything. I'm still learning, even now.

[ He can never fully let go of his restraint. ]

It's kind of a constant battle, huh? I cheat a lot, but I try not to be too obvious about it.

Well, I'm not doing a great job of it.

[ He's been spotted this easily, after all. ]

It's all about the misdirection, I guess. I can't say that I'm that good at it either. We had to get a shapeshifter to pretend to be Supergirl so we could be in the same place at the same time and fool my boss. It was kind of elaborate.

A shapeshifter? How did you manage that?

[ He usually gets Lois to cover for him. ]

He works for the DEO— Department of Extra-Normal Operations. I do some work with them from time to time, and my sister is an agent with them. So I called in a favor, basically.

[anewhope]

That . . . is incredibly convenient.

[ And totally unfair. ]

It really isn't something I can abuse. It was a really, really big favor. But I was going to lose my job and Cat is incredibly persistent.

[anewhope]

[ He crosses his arms. He doesn't know how to feel about this . . . support system. A little jealous, perhaps. ]

I'm glad you didn't. You were lucky.

I like to think so.

And I know you're not the cousin I know, but I can tell there's more to what you're feeling than you're saying, Clark.

I may be a little jealous.

[ A lot. Maybe. ]

[ she's not trying to be insensitive, she just honestly doesn't know. she's always been jealous of him ]

I don't think there's going to be a lot of Superman supporters, looking out for me.

[ The army helped. A little. ]
