April Star System - Update!

As previously mentioned, passengers may have noticed the people of this polluted little moon getting ready for some sort of party. The population has stayed rather hush-hush about the whole thing... Until now! Decorations are going up, shops are filling with special merchandise, and everyone is chattering about how the Gravity Rush celebration is only a week away.

THE CELEBRATION

This “Gravity Rush”, as they call it, is a very special time of year for the people of this moon. While they won’t let the passengers of the Drift Fleet in on most of the more intimate and culturally-bound aspects of this holiday, they are perfectly fine inviting them to the big party they’re throwing to kick it off!

And what better party to throw around here than a masquerade party?

As they are now happy to explain, both passengers and natives of the moon have one week to come up with something to wear to the party. Some prefer to dress up in their finest clothes, donning sharp suits, colorful ballroom dresses, and sparkling accessories... But many take a much more creative route and build entire costumes for themselves. Plenty of natives will be spending the next seven days shopping, building, sewing, gluing, and crafting together magnificent outfits out of whatever they can get their hands on--and they fully encourage their visiting friends to do the same!

The more magnificent the costume, the better. Some go dressed like animals, monsters, or important figures from their history... While others build outfits that embody abstract concepts, themes, or even bizarre constructions that don’t seem to follow much logic at all. All of the people on this moon are unofficially competing with each other to be the most magnificently-dressed, but the only actual requirement for a passenger’s attire is that they bring a mask to wear.

A mingle for the party (including more description of what folks can do and see there) is planned to go up on 04/19. In the meantime, passengers have one week to pull their look together! Entire costumes and good-looking outfits can be bought in stores if they have the credits for it... but if they don’t, it may be time to get creative. They can purchase fabric, craft supplies, and all sorts of interesting bits-and-bobs from merchants on the moon, or they can get crafty with other things they’ve got lying around their ships. It is time to see who in the Drift Fleet is good with sewing, who rocks a hot-glue gun, and who should... maybe be making friends with people in the first two categories instead of attempting to be artsy themselves.

NOTE: Characters don't necessarily need to wear a gas mask to this event, as most of the partying will be done safely inside buildings with excellent air filtration systems. While many of the revelers will be showing off their most elaborate and expensive respirators, the others will be opting for masks of a more traditional sort. So, as long as passengers cover some part of their face with something that could be considered a “mask,” they’ll be allowed to join in.

CHANGING TIDES

According to locals, there are two reasons that they hold such a magnificent party every year. The first reason is that these upcoming sacred days genuinely are something to be celebrated, and they party to show off the wealth and creativity that they have managed to cultivate here, despite their hardships. The second reason is that this giant party is traditionally meant to to tire everyone out, in order to discourage them from wandering around too much in the few days that follow.

The term “Gravity Rush” refers to a period of time where the moon’s orbit crosses a particular gravitational field stemming through the planet below them. It doesn't appear to be a very strong field by itself, but it does have an effect on the synthetic tides on the moon’s surface, which then interacts with the cocktail of chemicals in the water, to result in one very bizarre phenomenon.

Natives say that the smog is always low and thick on the water those days, and people have a tendency to see familiar things in the swirling clouds that lilt along the beaches and riverbanks. Some people say it’s just a matter of brain association--if you’ve been thinking about rabbits a lot, of course the clouds are going to look an awful lot like rabbits out of the corner of your eye. Others believe that the phenomenon has deeper and more mystical roots than that, and that the clouds are a chance to see into yourself.

The only thing known for sure is that people happen to see vague hints of whatever’s been on their mind a lot lately when they go out to watch the smog. While many make the decision to venture out and spend purposeful time on the beaches, many people stay home while the smog is still thick, wanting to avoid stumbling into bad memories or weird reminders on accident. For young people, going to see the smog clouds are a right of passage, and the things they see are said to guide them for the years to come--but the specific details and rituals of this journey are not something these people will share with outsiders; they’d prefer to preserve that part of their culture for their own people.

For the couple of days that this smog lingers, the whole city will be in a very strange mood--it is both a time of melancholy and a time of pride. Residents of the moon will be especially kind and patient during this period, and can often be heard gently congratulating each other for seeing anything in the clouds at all.

If any passengers do (or don’t) want to check out the smog banks, here’s what you’ll need to know:
  • This particular smog mostly gathers over bodies of water. Passengers who stay in town should have very little problem avoiding it. On the other hand, passengers who wander outside the city limits can stumble upon a river or a particularly water-logged patch of land by accident, if they aren’t watching where they’re going (or didn’t pick up on the “we’re all staying inside to avoid the weird smog” thing).
  • The things they see will be glimpses of whatever has been on their mind the most lately. It’s not like seeing a detailed illusion or a hallucination--the shapes in the clouds just happen to remind people of whatever they’ve been thinking about. Because of this, no two passengers will see the same thing in the same swirl of cloud.
  • Things seen in the clouds do not have to be negative--especially if the passenger has been thinking of good things, lately! Vague reminders of friendship, belonging, self-confidence, or maybe even a really, really good lunch are just as likely a subject to come up as missing someone, feeling trapped, or any other number of negative topics.
  • The smog does not affect hearing or sense of touch, though some people claim that the smog cloud itself smells strangely familiar while they’re out there.
  • This isn't intended to be a particularly traumatic event, but we also recognize that some characters might not react to it very well. While we do not discourage heavy content, we do ask that any posts or topcomments containing hallucinations, panic attacks, or particularly triggering descriptions to be marked with a content warning for players who would rather avoid that kind of thing.
  • This small event will only last for 2-3 days in-game, but players are welcome to start and backtag related threads for as long as they’d like.

For those of you wondering about the terraformers, don't worry! We haven't forgotten about them, but we're pushing those details out towards the end of the month to give ourselves a little mental breathing room.

In the meantime, if anyone has any questions about the masquerade, the mysterious smog, or the toxic moon in general, feel free to ask us in the QUESTIONS section below!

If it's elaborate enough, could one paint their face instead of wearing a mask?

Question! Is it alright for characters to acknowledge the coming festivities or will there be some sort of mod thing going on. Since it says at the top that passengers may have noticed? I just want to be sure so I can maybe make a post with Dany u.u
