Unfamiliar magic.

[ He makes a face. ]

I could have told you that.

[Mogget makes a dismissive noise.]

It's not Free magic. It's not Charter magic. It's not any magic that exists in my world.

... maybe if you loosened my collar, I might be able to sense more.

[ Kubo shakes his head. He senses strong magic in Mogget as well and if he's learned anything, it's the merit of caution. ]

That's fine. I don't need to know.

[Mogget sighs.]

It's always worth asking.

[shamisens]

What would happen if someone took it off?

[catonthefence]

[Dammit. More of those direct questions.]

I would be free. I would not be Mogget, I would be what I was before my binding.

[shamisens]

But the person you want dead isn't here . . . right?

Mm. No. None of the line is.

[shamisens]

Then . . . what would you even do?

[ Kubo can't even imagine it. Life narrowed down to one single desire. ]

I would have hands. Maybe. And I would stretch as far as I could reach, just to do it.

[What would he do? He can't really think that far ahead. He's governed by two drives. Be free. Kill the Abhorsen. Anything beyond that is too far away to think of.]

[shamisens]

I can help with the stuff you need hands for. If you want.

You should carry me. I can see in the dark. And I have little legs.

[And Ranna on his neck, making him perpetually lazy, even for a cat.]

[He wriggles back, crouches and leaps, up onto Kubo's shoulders where he promptly drapes himself like a furry scarf and starts purring.]

[ Kubo grins as he gets up. ]

Where to?

I don't much mind. I don't have anywhere to be.

Do you?

[shamisens]

I might go to the shopping center. I'll need some money for the day.

[Mogget looks at the phaser tag pistol and then at Kubo's face.]

It looked like fun!

[ But money comes first and he's practical. ] I'll have a chance to play later.

... how enamoured are you with the notion of ownership and possession?

[Because Mogget can make pick pocketing exceptionally easy, thanks to his little bell.]

[shamisens]

[ His eyebrow furrow as he puzzles that out before frowning. ]

We don't need to steal. I make enough to get by.

[ Kubo will never be rich, but even if he was, he'd never know what to do with too much money. ]

[Mogget makes a dismissive sound. Theft meant little to him. Possessions meant very little, either. He had nothing and mostly only wanted freedom, revenge, fish and sunbeams.]

[shamisens]

[ Kubo being human means possessions. But it's part of the gift his parents gave him.

He makes his way to the center of the shopping hub before bending down and places his pieces of paper on the ground. ]

[Mogget watches this strange behaviour.]
