OH JESUS okay um.

Initially, Zhas was... actually very uncomfortable around Nunnally. He's spent his whole life staying away from normal people, because he knows that his lifestyle is not one that other people should be dragged into. He tries very hard to keep innocent people, especially women and children, from ever learning that there's this horrible, cruel reality out there. He doesn't want another child to have to discover the hard way that monsters are real and that they are never truly safe.

So all of a sudden he's forced onto a ship with the absolute last kind of person he ever wanted to reveal his existence to. While he feels much less strongly about it now, echoes of that are still in everything that he does with her... He doesn't really believe she deserves to be around him, or anything. He is worried that he's going to scare her, or that she'll get hurt because she's around him, or that he's... somehow giving her the wrong idea, building up an image of someone she can get along with that will one day be violently shattered. He knows that he's horrible and violent, and for reasons he couldn't possibly expect her to understand or tolerate.

But something about her... also makes him very calm, and he doesn't understand it. He makes him feel weak and awkward and exposed, but not in a bad way. He's comfortable having failings around her. He's never equated being human with anything other than weakness, but he doesn't mind being weak around her, to the point where he would almost rather take off his face-paint and just... exist simply in her presence, even if he's bad at it. He doesn't really understand why she's so kind to him, but she makes him want to be kind back. He's never gotten a present from anyone before her. He's still thinking about what he could do to make her happy in return for that gesture.

It's interesting to me how he doesn't think of her as weak? Their relationship wouldn't work at all if he just thought she was some naive, innocent child... On the contrary, he thinks that she's very strong and capable of handling herself. He's noticed how she goes out of her way to try being self-sufficient despite her setbacks. She's smart, she's intuitive, and she's got a lot of drive--and she respects her willingness to help their team even though Zhas and Hange are in a whole other league, from a whole other world. He's probably depended on her a lot for help with the comms system, since he's both regrettably bad with tech and kind of a slow reader... And he doesn't mind, since he thinks she can take it. That's the whole reason he doesn't bother looking behind himself to make sure she's following him--he knows she can do it.

He really thinks that she's going to grow up to be someone amazing. She's the kind of person that he's trying to protect back home, and so... Even though he's worried that their worlds shouldn't have ever crossed, he's very grateful that he gets to get a glimpse of the other side in her.
