-- You're at sixty, Hunter. Which means I'm trailing by eighty-one.

[ likely, she shouldn't do him the favour of giving him the arithmetic. but she'd been doing the sums in her head as they played, and the answer came barely a heartbeat after his question. the calculations weren't difficult, but it remains clear that she'd done them almost on instinct. like recognizing colour or processing language. ]

Brains, beauty, and deadly aim. Add a temper and I may swoon.

[ He can and has made the calculations, but simply jotting them down is not nearly as fun, now, is it? That, and, it's good to double check. Both his math, and her honesty.

He writes down a nicely sized 60 in his column and struts back to his place, gesturing for her to proceed. ]

If you're curious, ask my crew. [ so, no, she isn't merely from aboard the starstruck. although there's nothing explicit in the grammar, she speaks it with a surety of tone that communicates command. and not always a gentle one. ] I'm sure they'd be happy to regale you with tales about my temper.

[ all this said with her eye on the board instead of him. she toes the line once more. this time, there is no showmanship. it's down to math -- and it's less about hitting than the bullseye then about finding the proper trio of numbers to take her middling 141 down to 0, but no further.

she does a little mental work and aims first for the triple nineteen, taking it handily. then the triple twenty, taking it as well. for her last twenty-four points, she takes the double twelve. but peggy doesn't showboat. she doesn't celebrate. she waits for him to do the math himself.

it's hardly fair, really. had he gone first, he very likely would have taken the pot. ]

I'll be sure to do that.

[ It takes a moment, math definitely doesn't come as naturally to him as it does her, and the 20 aside, she doesn't pick nice easy round numbers, but he gets there all the same, bowing his head lightly. ]

Guess my savings take another blow. More of the same? [ Signaling the bartender already, he takes his loss with grace. He can be a proper crybaby sore loser when he wants to be, but he prefers to save that for closer acquaintances. ]

    Yes, please.

[ stiff, but polite. it's that kind of politesse best wielded by their countrymen: it houses a hidden edge of guarded practicality. queensbury rules, and all that.

peggy allows herself a meager celebration when she drains her glass and leaves the empty on the bar top. ]

And then we'll go again. This time, you'll throw first. It's only proper.

[ she likes to win, certainly. but she likes it to be fair as well. ]

We wouldn't want to be improper, that would be a mortifying representation of queen and country.

[ He's not sure where the cameras are, or he'd give one a look. Get it, folks at home? They're British. ]

I'm afraid I only have one drink's worth left in my wallet, though. As I said, I'm fresh off the - space-boat. Doesn't really work when you're just switching ships, does it?

Then you'd better win, hadn't you? [ peggy refrains from telling him that last she recalls it's king and country, but perhaps that's just as well. the moment she invites that conversation, she becomes that woman from the olden days. sometimes, she can just about barely stomach it. ]
