[What what what was this? New and improved travel?

Strange shiny surfaces? Thing he could try to take apart and put back together completely wrong? Strangers from strange places?

A bright grin spread across his face.

    Planetside:

[Discovering and drawing new creatures? That is totally John's jam. Unfortunately, he can't really draw too easily underwater, but -- for lack of anything better to do he's out exploring the wildlife and plants that can be found under the sea. He's gotten himself one of those rainbow fish, too, and it's following him around quite happily. Maybe if he stares long enough at this jellyfish-thing he'll commit it to memory and draw it when he gets back shipside.]

    Shipside:

[So yeah. The thing about dying in 1782? Is that you have a lot of stuff to catch up on once you get to the future. Sure, the augment helps up to a point, and he's managed to get over most of his culture shock. (Sometimes he still looks a little shocked at electricity, though. What? It's awesome.) As it stands, though, he's always had a passing interest in the medical field, so his lab augment came in particularly helpful. He can still be found brushing up on everything he's missed in the past -- however many years he's been dead; most often in the common room. That's where he is today, surrounded by a bunch of tablets and making notes on his comm.]

Captain Jack Harkness | Doctor Who/Torchwood

    [personal profile] faceofbeau 2017-03-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't the first time Jack had been to an ocean planet before, but it was certainly the first time he'd been to one where there was no need for any kind of assistance when it came to breathing beneath the planet's surface. So he'd been a bit surprised by the initial drop into the water of course, without being offered any kind of filtration or breathing system, but as soon as he'd realized he could breath just fine? Well, he'd taken to the planet beautifully, and had begun to explore.

It hadn't taken him long at all to find a place that served the local version of 'drink'; kelp infused with alcohol. He'd had stranger things, and after trying it, he'd certainly had worse tasting things. It wasn't bad at all, really. He could be found partaking of the drunken kelp more than a few times; visitors might find him in moods that were somewhere between happily cheerful, flirty, and drunk, and- if he gave himself too much time to think- beginning to drift into silence and a familiar emptiness.

Kitty hasn't been in the best mood this month. Exploring the planet should be an adventure—something new and different and most importantly not confined to a space ship for days on end. Instead, it barely passes as a distraction. She's not looking that eager to interact as she drifts through the water. Still, she is aware of her surroundings. A lifetime—even a short one of just a couple decades—of battle has baked the instincts into her. So she stops, eyes widening when she recognizes the man nearby. Before she can stop herself with all the reasons this is a bad idea she's moving toward him.

"Jack!" She flings her arms around him for a hug. She really, really needed to see a friend right now and back in MarinaNova Jack had been one of her closest. They'd worked on the defense force together. They had been married for a day. Not so much because they meant to. The prison was a strange place and sometimes their minds weren't their own. Still, there was an intimacy and occasionally more than a little unsatisfied attraction in their relationship. Also some of the satisfied variety. But the moment she makes contact those reasons why this was not the best move come back.

"...You have no idea who I am, do you?" She's never seen anyone here who had also been in the prison and remembered it. Why would today be any different.

(OOC: So, obviously CRAU memories. If this doesn't work for you, just let me know!)

Are these really the only beds they have here?

    (B: In Person, shopping)

[Even traveling with pirates doesn't prepare you for living under water. Clearly the best way to adjust is to focus on what you're already comfortable with. Velvet is heading out to do some shopping. You might find her checking out the available local foods. But more likely you'll see her browsing whatever weapons she can find. Though she's a bit underwhelmed by the number of harpoons and such.]

[It should've been Billy's dream come true. He could set aside the forced kidnapping. He could disregard the alterations to his brain. There was a lot Billy was willing to accept in order to have the chance to explore the wider universe.

But being dropped right into the middle of an underwater civilization was a bit much for someone who'd shied away from the ocean for most of his life.

Fortunately, fish no longer terrified him. Unfortunately, the years of fearing the water didn't leave him with extensive experience swimming, so he spent much of the first day floating in a ball, looking at a 'how to swim' explanation, and working on improving his technique. After a quick frog-stretch, he shook his head and laughed.]

I've never been so relieved to be unable to drown.

    On-ship
[Billy was by far more comfortable exploring the tiny ship he'd been assigned to. He occasionally prodded at the back of his neck, frowning at the implications of the augment, but he ignored the discomfort by throwing himself into learning everything he could.

Sure, he was a communications-augment now, but he'd dabbled in piloting, engineering, and lab work at home and he longed to do it all. His crewmates of those specialties would often find him in the next room, reading a related manual and willing himself to understand an auxiliary engine diagnosis. The difficulty of the other specialties was unexpected and frustrating.

Finally, he tucked the data pad away in defeat.]

Only all the time. [Kitty is sitting on the arm of the pilot's chair instead of the part where the sitting is supposed to happen. The ship isn't flying at the moment since they're underwater and all. What's a pilot and co-captain to do? Actually, she'll just watch the newbie doing some of the same stuff she did when she arrived.

Computers had always come easily to her. She didn't want to brag, but she has some brag-worthy skills in that area. The genius word has been thrown around. This is also not her first rodeo when it comes to utilizing completely alien technology. In the past she's always picked it up relatively quickly. Here...? She spent months trying to learn the ship inside and outside and she could get to a certain point and no further. Even when she consulted with people who had the appropriate augments and did get it, she just couldn't. It was unbelievably frustrating. At this point, whether it's true or just the thing that helps her sleep at night she's fairly convinced that the augments don't just expand knowledge in some areas, they limit it in others. It's really the only thing that explains to her why someone with medical training and experience would be worse at treating someone than some random person that's never applied a bandaid but who happens to have a lab augment.]

Good rule of thumb not trusting the thing that controls your mind that was implanted by mysterious kidnapping overlords. Just a little tip from me to you.

((ooc: Shiro will be taken post ending of s2. I don't think it'll come up in this thread, but just in case, let me know if you don't want spoilers.))

    A.Network: [Voice]

Aren't there star charts available for pilots? Or at least the communicator officers? The scans have been good enough not to fly blind, but I admit I'm surprised such an organized fleet doesn't keep track of its trajectory.

Would an engineer be able to program something for it? [Usually that would be out of the question, but if he understands correctly, limitations work a bit different here. Which is frustrating to say the least.]

    B. Planetside: Air-diving

[Shiro isn't sure when it was the last time he flied for pleasure, but he knows he misses it. A lot. So as soon as he hears there's a popular tourist attraction that is all about flying, well, he's there faster than you can blink. He watches a couple of divers before he finally joins without hesitation, and boy does get into it. His first dive is moderate, but the more he tries it the higher he goes. It's obvious even for a stranger to notice how much he enjoys it - he looks the most relaxed he's been since he's arrived to this "show" and there's a delighted smile on his lips.

If you approach him during one of his in-between-dives breaks to ask him about his flying, pay a compliment or call him a lunatic, he'll keep the same smile as he answers with his own question.]

Would you like to join? There's a passenger seat in my craft and I wouldn't mind the company.

I wouldn't recommend it anyway, the workmanship is lacking. [ Already the piece, which has utterly faded from view of all those around him, starts to crack under the strain of his curse. ] It wouldn't last a minute in the hands of even an experience fighter.

[ The harpoon cracks further, splintering up the pole towards the blade. Eizen sighs returning it to the table with the rest of the pieces, gloved hands slipping into the pockets of his pants. He won't lie, he's relieved to see a familiar face around - one that looks and acts just like his memories of them do. The fact that it is Velvet though, that amuses him to no end. ]

I'm not surprised, these people have no need for fighters. They aren't beset by monsters or daemons, so they only need to produce something that will work for hunting.
