Information Part II (JUNE BUGS!)

As the Marsiva pulls the ships past the asteroid belt, some strange things start showing up in the Fleet's path...

Looted stations
Now that the Fleet is apparently flying far off the beaten path again, there is very little traffic in this part of space. Even the ships that were hiding out in the asteroid field don't seem to have followed you. The way-stations you find along the way are the standard default, automated affair... But most of them show distinct signs of looting or damage. Stores have been broken into and emptied, vending stations are busted open, and the NPCs are all long gone. The few machines that are not ripped open or trampled can still give useful goods, so it's not impossible to get things you need from the stations--but it might take extra work to find what you're looking for. This is a great opportunity for people to act as searchers or fetchers for other ships in the Fleet. With a little teamwork, everyone can get taken care of.

A ship in distress
From somewhere out in an empty area between way-stations, the Fleet picks up an automated, unmanned distress signal. The vessel in distress ignores all hails and attempts at long-distance communication, forcing the Fleet to wait until they drift within range to check it out up close.

The ship is roughly ten times the size of a standard Drift Fleet ship (but nowhere near the size of the Marsiva), and looks pretty alien. Though it's built of standard metals and synthetic materials, it has a very organic design. Like the Marsiva, it is rather ovoid in appearance, but flatter, and the surface has a distinctive rippled, grooved look.

Those with an Engineering or Pilot augment will find that they recognize this as some kind of merchant class ship. Those with a Communication augment can confirm that it's floating dead in the water. Readings show that the engines and major power systems are shut down, that life support is still working... and that the ship is still teeming with life. These life-form readings are a little nebulous and 'busy,' but definitely present. As the Fleet draws closer, some sort of space-faring 'vehicle' spits out of one end and goes propelling off into the darkness of space beyond the Fleet's range.

Since this is a vessel built for on-board trading, the docking ports of the ship all merge into a big communal entry space in the interior. It's meant for the crews of many smaller ships to be able to park and interact together--and it is from this entryway that brave and curious crews will begin their adventure.

The creatures and their bizarre behavior
The mysterious ship is crippled, but still suitable for life. Most lights and other non-vital systems are shut off, due to the ship idling on emergency power. And as the first crews begin to disembark, they are almost immediately met with nearby life-forms springing on them from the darkness--attacking without hesitation or any reaction to communication attempts. It promises to be a surprising battle, but a short one, as the few in the entry hold can be quickly defeated. There are more, but they don't immediately swarm from other parts of the ship to help.

The creatures are about three feet tall, covered in a fierce red-orange exoskeleton, and look very much like oversized, alien insects. The creatures that immediately attack do so without restraint, and those that do not (see the What's Going On section below) go about their tasks blindly, only reacting to stimulus if they are somehow hindered from what they are doing. When they are bothered or blocked in this way, they then attack. No efforts at communication are returned--either verbally or mentally/supernaturally. Whether violent or nonviolent, these 'bugs' are much like mindless animals or programmed robots in their demeanor.

What's going on?
Basically, the Fleet is coming upon an ailing ship, mysterious and full of strangely-acting bugs. Without much else to do in this stretch of space, and with how the ship seems to be periodically launching some sort of pod in a very specific direction, there is a lot that crews can explore, discover, and work on. There are bugs to fight and study, and a ship that can possibly be brought back to life, if a little bit of teamwork is applied.

  • Starting mingle - There will be a mod-posted mingle going up in the beginning, with a few different prompts that people can opt to join in on. It isn't an event post that everyone needs to immediately swarm in order to get involved--it's just a themed mingle to help kick everything off.

  • Projects - As for what everyone can work on, discover, or ignore--there are plenty of provided options for things to do, none of which are vital, and we encourage you all to play with this in whatever ways you want, or come up with new things! For characters who want things to work on, this is a good opportunity for them to get involved with others of similar skill-sets. For those who don't want to get involved, the ships and stations may be quieter and more peaceful than previous months, as attention turns toward this other mysterious ship. Also, when prompts are divided by augment or skill-set, those are only suggestion--you are absolutely not bound to them in any way, and nothing is exclusive to only certain kinds of characters.

  • Timeline - The information below is enough to get you all started as the Fleet begins to explore this event. More info will go up around June 17th describing what there is to discover and work on later on, regardless of how far along threads have gotten by that point. So, no one should feel like they have to rush or get involved in absolutely everything. The information and projects will be open for everyone to play with, regardless of where you are in the event.

    June 11th-17th
The first exploration of the mystery ship begins! Those who choose to dock can either help defend the entryway from the scattered bands of space bugs that filter in and attack (and perhaps help set up some kind of base or staging area there), start studying the creatures or elements of the ship, or even take up arms and go exploring. There will be a mingle set up for some of the beginning activity, but feel free to branch off with your own prompts and ideas. Here are some specifics to get you started:

The bugs - They are vicious things, with fierce mandibles and strong natural armor, but they can be fought and killed with Atroma-brand weaponry. They absolutely do not seem to acknowledge or respond to any forms of communication, and don't seem to be doing much in the way of thinking if they are read psychically. Those that are roaming tend to travel in packs of two to four, and unfailingly attack on sight. Only a few of these packs travel to the entryway every day, but further in the ship, there are many more.

Traveling deeper into the ship is extremely dangerous, so don't go anywhere without an armed escort. The bugs seem to generate a minor disruption field as a natural defense, which renders some magic and supernatural attacks less effective against them. They are also fast, strong, and they take some effort to kill, so exercise caution when facing them in a physical battle. There may be injuries sustained during these skirmishes, so having someone with medical skills around might be helpful.

Once passengers begin to explore deeper areas of the ship, they will find mobs of bugs busy at various tasks, much like worker ants mindlessly toiling away at whatever job they've been given. Some are chewing holes in the walls and mechanisms to create storage chambers, some are filling said storage chambers with food and organic matter (some of it recognizably looted from nearby stations), and others are busily set on less-obvious goals. All nonviolent bugs seem ignorant or blind to any outside stimuli, until their paths or goals are blocked. When this happens, they immediately turn violent until the obstacle or enemy is no longer in their way.

It's relatively easy to procure dead specimens to take back to study in ship labs, but living ones prove to be tirelessly violent captives. If anyone is dead-set on trying to accomplish this, it would take a large effort to catch one, and strong confines to keep it successfully. Either way, the results of most sorts of testing will be shared in that batch of new information that will be posted around the 17th.

The ship - Beyond the main entryway, the ship is primarily made up of several tall, open corridors that wind around in huge loops, with numerous large, uniform rooms branching off all along the length. Most objects and devices seem to have been broken, dismantled, and removed, with only useless scrap left behind. Absolutely all organic material has been looted. The layout is rather simple, but it will still take most of the month to explore the whole thing with all the bugs slowing down exploration.

While the other rooms are mostly full of bugs, the entryway is pretty safe by comparison. The aliens don't seem to use it much, so it's only the few wandering bands of violent bugs that bother those who are staying there. It would be relatively easy to set up a sort of staging area here, for passengers working in the ship to interact and coordinate with each other. Those who aren't investigating, building, or fighting could help with medical, supply, or simple morale needs. They could also just sit around here to watch the activity.

While there isn't much in the way of computer systems accessible from the entryway, there are consoles and servers to be found a short distance further in. Those who might be interested in getting the ship running again, or exploring what data might be stored on its internal network, can play with those.

Finally, if anyone wants to try and catch one of those pod things that launch out of the ship every now and again, give it a shot! But with how unpredictable the launching intervals are, and how fast they fly, it will likely take some work. (In other words, if anyone wants to try for it, there will be information about what you catch on that post that will go up around the 17th.)

    Go forth!
Whether you decide to explore the ship, or hang back in the comfort of known territory, the audience is watching. Dear passengers, are you going to help, fight, warn, or ignore? The show is yours.

Especially with all the new folks joining the Fleet right now, it's a good time to meet new faces, maybe find other passengers with similar skills or interests. Go shoot some bugs, do some science, fix up a wreck, hand out lunch, or bum around with those who are smart enough to stay out of a spooky bug-infested mess.

In the mingle and elsewhere, all divisions of projects and skillsets are merely loose suggestions. Wander wherever you want!

As always, please post all questions here (for clarification, planning, or otherwise), and feel free to use this post for any plotting, discussion, or idea-sharing needs you might have. Have fun!

so Axel's definitely gonna try and get to those working consoles further in, because he's nosy and wants to know what's the dealio. what might he find if he accesses the servers?

Sheena has no security person on board, so she'll be hesitant to send in her crew at first, but she's also the type never to leave someone behind. So she'll be making her way in eventually. She's strong but the bugs are too (and resistant to magic?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN'T SMACK THEM WITH CARDS). I'm willing to have her team up with someone who has fleet weaponry/armor.

Belthazar might set a couple bugs on fire. For science. He'll mostly be staying out of trouble though, since he knows he's not the athletic type.

DAMMIT SHEENA WHY YOU GOTTA BE SO SHONEN?

But yes, Kaneis will definitely be there to help her out once he hears that she wants to go in. Though he doesn't have any guns so his help is limited to how hard he can stab things. And heal. God Sheena.

Axel will be disappointed that setting the bugs on fire doesn't work as well as expected, but since chakrams aren't standard Atroma weaponry he's unarmed. he may resort to punching bugs in the face, which may result in him getting the crap chomped out of his hand. anybody wanna help him with that?

he'll definitely want to investigate further inside the ship tho. since he's got the communications augment, he'll want to play around with any consoles and see what he can learn about the ship and the bugs.

Zhas enthusiastically marches forward to punch bugs in the face IF YOU NEED A DUDE TO PUNCH BUGS IN THE FACE, HE IS SO READY TO BE YOUR GUY!! He is 80% interested in eradicating the entire species so someone might actually want to tell him to stop shooting every space arthropod he comes across. He is 20% interested in bringing one back ALIVE so that Coil can do SCIENCE on it so he will enthusiastically (albeit quietly) help with those efforts as well.

Robin meanwhile is just like "jesus christ :|" and is probably going to be of very little help for the event... He'll keep an eye on his crewmates and his friends, and periodically help the other engineers dig through what's left on the ship... But he doesn't like these bugs and he ain't interested in getting too involved right now. SO IF YOU NEED A DUDE TO CHAT WITH ON THE SIDELINES, this is your guy.

Tek will be the most helpful creature ever! He will give you all the unsolicited advice and semi-constructive criticism you could want. Just don't ask him to lift anything heavy. And don't track anything gross into his ship.

...But no, really. He'll be curious and halfway interested in the outcome of the whole thing, but won't want to be directly involved. Any help he offers or defending of fleetmates he does will be subtle and unpredictable. But if anyone wants to hang out on the sidelides and uselessly chat, he's down for that 24/7.

Coil MUST LEARN ABOUT BUGS. MUST INVESTIGATE. He's going to be creeping his way into most of the projects (even though he has like no skill in technology) just sticking his nose in to see what's going on. He's also going to be all over wanting to dig into these bugs for science. He's probably going to be diving into the rest of the ship without as much protection as he needs, so... armed buddies are appreciated. Also maybe medics.

Nel He could be so useful with his elven eyesight and communication augment! ...But he'll be avoidant of his responsibilities, as usual, unless someone catches him and tells him to get to work. I'd like him to get involved with the other comms folks and work on the consoles, but it would take nudging. So, we'll see how that goes! He'll either be reluctantly useful, or a useless little burden. Like he does.

Crowley Remembers Dead Space and Event Horizon from Paradisa, so there is no way, with any amount of bribing or cajoling, that will get him anywhere near that ship. He'll be staying on the Pathstone and ignoring any and all requests for his help. Sorry, guys, last time he was on an apparently deserted ship, he lost his mind and nearly ripped a girl's head off. HE AIN'T PLAYING THAT GAME AGAIN.

Sokka I'm not too sure yet. He'll want to check for anyone injured and the like. Want to salvage the ship for parts, stuff like that. He'll probably be interested in the pods, too. SCIENCE!! He has his boomerang, but that's about it, so if someone wants to hang around and help him fight theses things off, he'd appreciate it.

Fenris will be happily killing all the bugs. ALL OF THEM. It's basically like a dungeon, right? He has the security augment, so he has heaps of Atroma weaponry, along with his trusty sword. His lyrium will probably not be working as well as it should, thanks to the bugs, but he's not gonna let that stop him. If anyone needs an escort, he can be bribed with alcohol.

Allen fully supports Crowley staying off that ship. Stay where it's safe and not prone to make you into a crazy person, Uncle.

That said, Allen will ignore the life lessons Dead Space and Event Horizon taught him, and will totally be willing to go on the ship with Sokka and help as a bodyguard. You and Beverly do your science thing, he'll just be punching space bugs.

    For Science, of course.

Nunnally - Guess who is coming into her calling of ORGANIZING and INFO GATHERING? Nooooners :D She is not setting foot wheel on that ship, no siree, so she'll be staying in the Red Fish trying to glean whatever information her precious communication equipment can get her. And when she's not doing that she'll be touching bases with other people on other ships, and trying to gather together as much info so that they can all figure out what the heck is going on. Should be a fun time :')

Colette - On the other hand is all about exploring! But she doesn't want to hurt the bugs if they can help it, especially when they find the bugs that just seem to be working on stuff :( but she'll still come to help out, because fighting... she's pretty good at it. Bobbin will want to explore, definitely, but he's kind of a soft squishy mage who can't even cast the spells he needs without his staff!!! He's from First Breath so perhaps the Security there, Lila or Gaignun should teach him what guns are! Otherwise he might trail along after people, or sneak along unwisely on his own.

ALLEN will be willing to check out the ship and help out any groups that are exploring it. He's good at killing things if you need someone to help hack up bugs, and he is also there for anyone who wants non-magical medical treatment. Want to get stitched up instead of magically healed? He's your dude. But yes, other than that he will be discreetly enjoying an excuse to punch the face of monsters.

KANEIS will only go on the ship at the insistence of crewmates/people he knows. Otherwise he thinks it's damn stupid to go into an abandoned ship that could very much be a trap. But if you convince him to help- he'll be there to either help out with fighting off bugs or magically healing your asses. But no really guys, this seems like a damn stupid idea to him.

ALEX will be trying to stay out of that ship and away from those bugs, unless it comes down to accompanying someone she cares about. She'd generally rather stay the fuck away from anything that could hurt or kill her, but that doesn't mean she'll sit on her ass if her crew is in any danger. Her magic could be used to navigate the ship more safely, or as defense against the bugs. So she's there if anyone needs her, but generally isn't jumping at the chance to explore the dead ship.

Shirley is like pure mage and therefore not much use offensively, so she'll be generally staying out of combat and focusing on either organization/coordination or helping with medical aid. She'll also lend a hand around where free, although those two things are probably her strongest points in this situation.

Yuya just can't fight, but he's pretty agile and can maybe play messenger/gofer if needed. Otherwise he'll probably feel kind of useless and then try to not fail at being an engineer - which is to say he'll be okay at the basic stuff and might need help with some more complicated tasks.

Jr. will be all for exploring and killing (and healing)! Need a tiny security guard? He's your man boy! Don't think he's above scavenging, either, because he'll find and take anything that could be useful.

Michael wants to fight, let him fight, he will fight!!!! SEND HIM OVER CAPTAIN. He has a security augment so he has a bunch of weapons and happens to be very good at fighting on default. So he's more than happy to go over there and kill anything that moves or skitters or whatever. Lets go!!!

Duke will be moderately reluctant to actually get on the deserted space ship (see commentary about Event Horizon in other people's plotting comments-), so it will take some convincing to get him to help beyond the entry. Maybe he'll sit there and be a healing point-

Asteffiel will be curious! AND THEN the bugs will probably think that the plant is just weirdly active food, so if anyone wants to rescue him before he goes spectre to escape.

Or come across the plant going ;A; with missing bits of his leafy clothing, trailing bugs behind him...

... he will avoid the bugship after that.

Wanda will be more than willing to help any fellow fleet members' in setting up and holding some kind of home base/staging area for the brave individuals, who wish to venture further into the bug-infested ship. Since her powers are likely not going to be very effective against the bugs, she'll prefer to hang back and play guardian for engineers or medics or whoever wants to be on the ship, but not necessarily on the front lines.

Adachi will want no part of the actual mystery ship exploration. Risking life and limb against killer alien bugs is definitely not his jam. However, he can be coerced into exploring and scavenging some of the seemingly abandoned way-stations in the area. It's just enough work to seem productive, while not being anything overly dangerous or rigorous.

    Beverly Crusher

    [personal profile] dancingmd 2015-06-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
She won't be particularly happy about this ship, as the bugs' behavior will remind her too much of being on a Borg ship, but she's a professional, so she's not going to let that stand in her way of finding out what the hell is going on here. She'll be wanting to check out the ship, will definitely be doing studies on some dead bugs in her lab, and as always, she's here for any medical emergency.

(And she is a pretty damn good shot too, as far as protection goes!)

Idea! Would you be down for having Beverly save Wanda from some bugs? Since Wanda will likely want to rely on her powers for offense, she could get caught off guard by them not working super well against the bugs, which could allow Beverly to blast a few to keep them off her? What do you think?

    [personal profile] justamobster 2015-06-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Ladon is going to be a dumbass and either get separated or go by himself and wind up getting attacked by bugs. Once he finds out his magic isn't effective, he'll have no choice but to change to defend himself. As a result there will be a black dragon on the ship, fighting off a bunch of the critters as best he can. He'll try to keep up the same silent charade he did on the previous planet, but there's a chance he'll out himself to rescue people, depending on how things go.

Change of plans due to IC (Lucky leaving) and OOC (time constraints, apping a new character) stuff. Ladon won't be going on the bug ship and will instead just get drunk and mope support you guys from afar.

Cole is sneaky, has kitchen knives and cannot be stopped if people need helping. He'll be attempting to scout out the area further past the bugs if he can and will inevitably turn up with injuries because he's not good at coming out of combat uninjured.

    Elize Lutus

    [personal profile] princessia 2015-06-13 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Elize is capable of using dark spirit magic, which will unfortunately, not be very effective against the bugs (and considering she doesn't have her mana booster, she's not as powerful without it.) She might have to spam her spells or something to be more effective. But she is also capable of healing spells if youre hurt or something!

During the first day whenever her ship docks, Elize will accidentally be getting herself chased deeper into the ship. Oops. This will prompt her use her dark spirit artes/magic which will obviously not work very well. So, she'll be getting rescued by Cullen and Jove...

Later days however, she'd have learned her lesson and be hanging around near entrance. She will want to accompany people venturing into the ship and act as a healbot. But if you tell her to stay put, she will stay put... she'll just be bummed about it. Haha. I'll have an open top-level for this one!

If anyone wants to do anything specific though, let me know and I can try to set up a prompt?!

Uzuki is an ordinary person and really should not be anywhere near the giant killer bugs, yes. That being said, she'll probably participate in whatever Communication's during all of this, perhaps doing other things, like... Say, seeing if she can use the scanning equipment to get a map of the ship and direct people through it as needed.

Also, it would probably be a really good idea to see if we can get the encrypted data moved to the ship computers before we decrypt them. Do you think some Engineering and Communications teams could rig up a device to let us remotely transfer all that data over so we don't have to sit in a floating death trap to do our work?

...Actually, I wonder if I should put that up as a question...

Natasha is definitely going to be on board for this one, and probably in a slightly more reckless state of mind thanks to recent events. There's definitely probably going to be some sort of implied challenge for bug-slaughtering; first one to kill fifty wins sort of thing, so that could be fun in a danferous and violent way! She's also gonna try and get to some of the command consoles deeper in to try and see about some way to get off this show, and is probably gonna end up alone and knee-deep in a horde of bugs. Fast. So there's that too, if anyone's interested! Let's kill things til we can't feel feelings.

Since Wanda is going to be saved by Beverly early on, she'll want some fire arms training, so that she can better fend off the bugs. Think Natasha would be up for that?
