Like in theory? Sure. Just not in history or much in fiction, but there's always theory.

[anewhope]

[ He adjusts his glasses, a disjointed movement. ]

Well, in general. At least, that's what I believe.

[She looks at him thoughtfully. So much of her life was defined by war. The one that her grandfather escaped by immigrating to America and the one that killed her parents and made her a warrior at the ripe old age of thirteen.] It doesn't sound real to me, but it's only going to get real if people can believe in it and make it happen.

[anewhope]

[ He grins, a little bashful. Honestly, he had always believed in it. Lois had been the one to cement that faith and take the plunge. ]

I've met people who do. That convinced me that things can change.

Is there much fighting where you're from now? ...Where are you from?

[anewhope]

I'm from Metropolis. . . . We're recovering from an alien invasion.

[passingthrough]

I don't think I know it. [But it sounds like a city with that suffix.] Is it on a version of Earth? The Vision mentioned an alien invasion in his reality. Do you know the Avengers?

[anewhope]

It is on Earth. I've never heard of the Avengers though. What are they?

[Okay, fine, she'll use the word that makes her uncomfortable. It doesn't really matter as long as it's not being applied to herself and she's not an Avenger.] Superhero team out of New York I think. Or the attack was centered there at least.

I'm from Chicago. I think our off-world neighbors wanted no part of our mess.

[anewhope]

[ His expression changes to one of awe and surprise. ]

There are other superheroes?

[passingthrough]

Sure. [Said like "of course." But...] Other in addition to whom?

[anewhope]

[ He hesitates. He doesn't want to call himself a superhero. ]

We have a vigilante in Gotham and . . . another in Metropolis.

[passingthrough]

[She'd rather be called a vigilante too. Sometimes she just says she's an assassin even though that paints the wrong picture. Freedom fighter might be the most accurate from her situation.]

Gotham sounds familiar. [From her days in the last multidimensional trap. It's where Artemis Crock and Terry McGinnis were from, but that doesn't come to mind.]

Lots of people in the Fleet have powers. I'm not sure they're all heroing with them, but you'll run into that a lot.

[anewhope]

[ People with powers. People like him. It was . . . exhilarating. ]

That's . . . impressive. That they can all be in one place.

[passingthrough]

You get used to it. [She takes a step backward directly into a display so that parts of her have disappeared and it looks like there's a mask sticking out of her shoulder.] Ta-dah?

[anewhope]

[ He can't help the double-take. ]

Amazing. Should I clap?

[passingthrough]

[She steps back out to re-solidify.] I don't really know what the appropriate reaction to that is. I just roll with whatever happens. It's always nice when it's recoiling in fear or trying to kill me.

[anewhope]

Does that happen a lot?

[ Was this the future his father spoke of? ]

Not in the fleet. [At home, pretty much all the time.]

[anewhope]

[ Then it seems some things have not changed. Looks like you were right, Pa. ]

It's good to know at least in some places, you can be accepted.

[passingthrough]

I had my team back home too. The X-Men. I'm guessing you've never heard of us.

[anewhope]

No. Like I said. There aren't many superheroes around.

[ He still doesn't count himself as one. Not yet. ]

[passingthrough]

That's a big word. I realize I used it first, but The Vision has a "the" in his name and a cape. It felt appropriate there.

[anewhope]

[ He nods. ]

To be honest . . . I'm not even sure I'm using it correctly.

[passingthrough]

I don't know if there is actually a right way. I just know when I hear it I think about the people I didn't get to in time, and I don't feel so super or heroic.

...And that was a lot of realness to drop on a guy I just met who pretends not to break masks on purpose.
