If you do not mind, my friend! Perhaps you can taste them for me? And I can tell you what to combine to make a fantastic dish.
[Sorry buddy he needs your hands and taste buds.]
no subject
Okay. Where do you want to start?
[He grabbed one of the packets and looked it over.]
no subject
[He points at the one in question, then starts rummaging through the others, mumbling to himself as he tries to find the right flavours. ]
no subject
It definitely looks odd.
[He gave a slight sniff, and then cautiously tasted it.]
Mm... not bad, taste-wise. Though, chicken in gel form is just really weird.
[At least Altean food good was just that... it wasn't trying to taste like something else.]
no subject
[Even the Grey Stuff looks better than that, okay, and that's just grey blobs. ]
But this is good, if the taste is right. How about this one?
[It's supposed to be mushroom but who knows, really.]
no subject
Another cautious taste, and he had to really think about it because the texture was really throwing him off, but he nodded.]
Kinda. I mean, it's definitely something. Though, if my friend from home was here, he'd probably be way better at this than me.
no subject
[Everything has awful texture and it's just wrong. ]
There are almost no herbs here, this is terrible.
no subject
[Though, the gel thing might bother him a bit. Hunk definitely preferred fresh ingredients whenever available.]
I guess it's kind of hard to keep those on a ship. And I can't imagine a water planet is going to have all that many available. At least, not like we'd be used to.
no subject
Ah, qui. For that, we would need a woodland. Whihc we are sadly lacking at this present time.
no subject
[Hunk always looked insanely proud and happy when they enjoyed something he made.]
I guess we're just going to have make do, huh?
So... what else do we need, then?
[He poked around at a few other packets.]
You said we needed wine and... what ever that fat thing was, right? I don't see anything for that.
no subject
[Sweet Jesus, he misses cooking.]
Lardons. Hmm, I suppose any cooking fat will do. And there has to be wine somewhere. Everyone has wine somewhere.
no subject
[Maybe there was a fresh storage somewhere that had things that, well, weren't gel. He decided to explore a little further into the kitchen to find out.]
Well, we've got some... solid stuff in here. Not gel, but still apparently flavored or something.
no subject
[Taverns. Yep. That's what he's gonna call them.]
I suppose we have to work with that we have.
no subject
[His brain associated a "tavern" with something out of a fantasy movie, but he was pretty sure that wasn't what this guy was talking about. It was probably something like this, but with actual staff and upgraded facilities.
Keith went through what there was in the way of "solids" before finding some things that might fit the bill of what they were looking for.]
Well, we have chicken solid and gel, and mushroom gel... but we're a little short on the rest. It looks like most of the solid stuff in here is some sort of protein item... like a meat or something. The gels are apparently just about anything.
[Keith could just imagine the panic Hunk would be going through at such a selection.]
no subject
[H absolutely means bars, but that's a dumb word for them, in his humble opinion. ]
That is a great tragedy. How do they expect people to eat at all? Prisoners are treated better.
no subject
[Because that was what they were called in modern times whether the talking magical candle person liked it or not.]
You got any other ideas? Maybe we should go through and see what we actually have, and then work from there? You know, instead of figuring out that we only have like, half a receipe's worth of ingredients every time.
no subject
[Come on, Keith, a bar is something you prop something else up with, come on. ]
That might be a better idea, mon ami. A half-made dish would be a very sad thing.
no subject
Alright. So, let's see. Since you have all the gel things, you can look and see what's there. I'll check the rest of the solids.
[He started rummaging through them, grouping them by flavor so it was easy to tell which ones they had.]
no subject
Aye aye, mon capitaine!
[And off he goes, rifling through the gels, squinting at the words on them. Honestly, these are awful choices, how can people live with such basic flavours? ]
no subject
Okay... not much to choose from here. I've got chicken, wheat, mixed vegetable, cheddar, spicy chili, teriyaki, peanut butter, cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla, banana, and... "unflavored".
[He said that last word an little uncertainly.]
Why would someone eat something that has no flavor at all?
no subject
[He looks at one candle hand, then the other, then slowly pats them together. Peanuts and butter doth not a pair make???? ]
A very sad and deprived individual. It's tragic to even think about it. A life without flavour.
no subject
[He sniffed at it. Definitely smelled like it. And he tasted it. Yup. Probably the closest thing to the original there was.]
Yeah. Definitely peanut butter.
[Keith couldn't help the small smile at that.]
Man... you'd really get along with my friend.
no subject
[He has no idea. It sounds weird, but pretty much everything he's experienced in the Fleet so far has skewed over to the 'weird' category, so he has to find some give somewhere.
He flashes a wide grin.]
I like to think I get along with most people. [He has to, it's literally his job. ] But it would be nice to meet someone with similar tastes to my own.
no subject
[He shrugged. He wasn't, so it was all good.]
Hunk imagines himself to be something of a gour... gourmet? [He had a specific word for it that was similar, but Keith couldn't really be bothered to remember it right.] But he's really good at it, too. Like, he's been able to take alien ingredients we've never even encountered before, and turn them into something that actually tastes good.
no subject
That is a skill to be really proud of. It is tricky enough to create delicious meals with ingredients you know well. You need to get them at the right season, in the right environments to make a truly perfect dish. To do that with alien foods is incredible.
