Jack Harkness | Whoniverse
[ Jack was never the sort to ever shy away from some new adventure, especially if it gave him the opportunity to find something new, or someone new. And of course, there was always that certain thrill that could only be found by diving headlong into something unknown where he may not even return home. It was a stupid idea, he knew, but it was an old habit that he just couldn't seem to shake.
He'd managed to get ahold of one of the more affordable masks, sadly unable to flirt his way to get parts for one of the nicer ones at the better price, but still, he wasn't particularly worried about his health. His mind was another story, and something he'd want to keep safe if the stories he'd heard were true. A man with as long of a life as Jack had and been to as many places as he had had much to fear and far too many demons he'd rather not get dragged out into the open.
He wasn't entirely sure what to expect when he came in through the mist, but the island that he'd picked stretched out for miles and miles, and was thick with strange and colourful foliage that stretched up and up through the mists, aching for the sun that lay beyond the blanket. Down below the canopy of trees was brush that tangled and wove itself along the ground, hiding whatever might have called it home rather effectively, and as Jack departed the vessel, he could feel the dense blanket of the forest floor, rife with dead leaves and what he would have called ferns. Aside from the mist, he found it was still rather humid, as one might have expected from a forest like this and made breathing through his makeshift mask somewhat difficult. Still, it could be exciting, especially if they were to find anything new or rare. ]
Well? Let's get to it, shall we? Sample bags ready.. no idea what we might find out here.
no subject
He checks that his own mask is in place and that the mist isn't messing with his artificial arm. He still isn't used to the shiny metal limb and hasn't quite gotten comfortable with the idea that it won't rust or end up damaged by a spot of bad weather.
When it seems to be working just fine he grabs his own bag and follows Jack.]
True, but at least the company's nice.
[Flirting is always the best way for the elf to handle his nerves.]
no subject
Help is appreciated. ]
Couldn't agree more.
[ He cast a look back at Cyril, and gave him a not-at-all-subtle once-over and a flirtatious smile. ]
Sample bags, water, radio, machete, flairs? That.. should be everything, right? Been a while since I've had an excursion. Ever do anything like this?
no subject
Maybe less mist that supposedly makes you mad and more fighting dragons and undead though.
no subject
Dragons? Sounds like fun. You'll have to tell me all about it.
[ He pulls his machete from its holster and uses it to push a branch aside, taking care to examine the steps ahead before stepping over a fallen tree. ]
Watch your step. It's hard to see.
no subject
Smile? [He's not thinking of Jack's smile.
He also might be flirting but there is an edge to his body language that says that he isn't entirely unaware of what is going on around them. They're wandering into danger, so while he might talk to make himself more comfortable, he's still paying attention to their surroundings and his voice is always careful not to be so loud as to carry far.]
no subject
Nice save.
[ Jack takes a moment to hack a few branches away, enough for him to declare the immediate space safe when he reaches a hand back for his companion. ]
Don't wanna stray too far, now. Always best to keep your partner close.
no subject
Why, you don't have to think of an excuse to hold my hand. I'll happily stay close to you.
no subject
[ Jack chuckles and gives a playful wink, helping his companion over the fallen tree. ]
What's it like wbere you're from? I know you said dragons but... they could live anywhere.
no subject
I am from Thedas. There are a few of us here, but from different versions of the world. Have you heard of it yet?
no subject
[ He had admittedly been filling his days with other things including... getti g to know people. Those from Cyril's neck of the woods hadn't quite been able to cross paths with him in that way, but he's always happy to learn. ]
How can there be different versions? Did you all vet picked up at different times?
no subject
Well, yes and no. I'm from the lastest time, so far. But for example, in my version of Thedas I'm the leader of an organization called the Inquisition, but many of the friends I made during my time there don't know me because to their minds someone else is the Inquisitor. And there's another elf named Leilani and in her world, she is the one who becomes Inquisitor. The differences mostly seem to center around key figures and their choices, the Inquisitor seems to be one of three. The other two are known as the Hero of Ferelden and the Champion of Kirkwall. A couple of different versions of each of them have been here as well.
[He says all of this very matter-of-factly but still with a certain level of friendliness. There's no hint of the crisis of identity this caused him, or the pain of having people close to you who have no idea who you are.]
no subject
You've got too nice of a smile to be associated with such a stern and grumpy word. I guess what matters is just doing the job and working toward what's best for everyone, right? Unless you're mortal enemies... might make it hard.

Even better that he had found someone to go exploring with. The locals weren't to keen on it, or at least the majority of them weren't and he couldn't say he blamed them. The mist did seem intimidating, even to him, a man used to dropping into the unknown. ]
Let's hope it's not something with teeth.
[ Because that would be just his luck. ]
no subject
[ Jack can't help himself but to laugh, if only as a cover for his own nerves. Yes, he's excited to jump into something scary and unknown, but it's still scary and still unknown. Even for a man like Jack, there are still many things which pose a threat. ]
Besides, you're armed, aren't you?
no subject
[ He reached down and touched his firearm, taken from the Tourist. It wasn't much, but it was something and may or may not be helpful. ]
True, but let's just hope that the mist doesn't have any flammable properties anywhere.
no subject
[ Flammability hadn't even crossed Jack's mind, but it was something to think about. He bends down, picking up a twisted-looking branch and taking a moment to brush it off of dirt and small... what he assumes are bugs. ]
Well if you're really that worried, we don't have to stay long. You gonna be all right? We can turn back now if you want.
no subject
Depends on where those teeth go, huh?
[ He sassed back out of habit, even though the mist was giving him the major creeps. All the more reason to stick closer to jack, and to play flirt. It kept his nerves from getting out of hand. ]
I'm fine. I've gone into worse than this before. Also know it's not the best idea to linger to very long at any given time in places like this.
no subject
[ Jack reached out with the branch, brushing some leaves aside a d doing a quick sweep of the ground. He's not sure if they have snakes here, but he's not about taking any chances. ]
It's not getting to you yet, is it?
no subject
No, not yet. I got one of the top-grade masks, so I should be good for awhile.
[ He glanced to Jack as the mist swirled around them, almost caressing them, though it wasn't a touch he much cared for. ]
I wonder if we couldn't take a sample of the mist itself? Mist shouldn't have any sort of pressure, but according to the locals the further down you go into it, the heavier it gets - like water.
no subject
[ He paused and gave Kirk a look-over. ]
You sure you're up for that? We're barely getting going and you already look like you wanna turn back.
no subject
[ Kirk looked at Jack through the mask and there's a touch of a glower there. His voice isn't quite a snap, but it is definitely a touch harder. ]
This is my job, Mr. Harkness. If I need to turn back, I'll tell you. I've just done this enough to know that when we come to places like this, there's always more to these things than there seems.
[ His point made, he moved a little ahead and to the left, stopping to kneel and consider a bit of foliage, taking out a small utility knife to cut a bit off. ]
no subject
[ Jack spreads his hands and laughs. Apparently he'd touched a nerve with his comment. ] Forgot who it was I was talking to for a moment there. I'm very sorry. Didn't mean to get all concerned.
[ There's a roll of Jack's eyes and a shake of his head while he steps carefully on ahead. ]
no subject
We'll pretend I believe you.
[ He slipped the sample int one of the small containers he had brought and into his pack before rising and following along with Jack. It wouldn't do to lose him in this mist. ]
Watch that there will be actual ghosts here.
no subject
[ Jack pauses to examine a flower hanging from a tree and makes sure to carefully remove it and place it in a bag. ]
You remember if they said anything about what happens if it starts affecting you?
